Chicago Med’s Ripley May Have Crossed His Point Of No Return, But I’m More Alarmed By Another Doctor’s Actions

Heads up! The following discussion may contain spoilers for Episode 13 of Chicago Med’s current season, titled “Look in the Mirror.” This episode will be available exclusively on Peacock, which requires a subscription to stream.

Following the intense confrontation between Chicago Med‘s character Ripley and an aggressive individual in the last episode, it seemed inevitable that he would find himself in deep trouble in the next one titled “Take a Look in the Mirror.” Granted, his actions of brutally attacking a man, attempting to treat him in the hospital, and then exploding in the ER leading Goodwin to suggest his termination to the board, are questionable at best. However, it’s important to remember that Ripley has always been unpredictable, even before the 2025 TV schedule.

In a rather unexpected turn of events, I found Dr. Charles’ actions towards Jackie to be quite disconcerting, particularly the seemingly careless manner in which he carried them out. Although there were hints of a complicated dynamic between the two characters during Season 10, they both appeared to understand that their personal feelings should not interfere with Jackie’s custody battle for her daughter. I must admit, I was left feeling a bit puzzled, but given Dr. Charles’ history of romantic misfortunes, it was reassuring to see him acknowledging his own feelings and Jackie prioritizing her daughter’s needs. Moreover, watching Oliver Platt navigate the tangled web of his character’s personal life is always an enjoyable experience.

In this scenario, it appears fortunate that Dr. Charles was available at the last minute to replace the Gaffney psychiatrist who couldn’t testify due to a hospital emergency. Dr. Charles confirmed Jackie’s diagnosis of PTSD following her suicide attempt and elaborated on the factors contributing to her condition. Importantly, he emphasized that his testimony was purely professional and not influenced by any romantic feelings. This evidence proved crucial in granting Jackie joint custody of her daughter and full parental rights. It seems like a happy ending indeed!

In the realm of One Chicago, it wasn’t just any ordinary day! When Jackie paid a visit to Dr. Charles’ office with exciting news, she awkwardly confessed that she had been less than truthful about her lack of feelings towards him. He responded in kind, confessing his own hidden emotions, but added:

“Indeed, I too have been harboring feelings for you.

It’s uncertain if this plan is ideal for me at the moment. [Dr.] Nemic didn’t have an emergency today, so I concocted a reason to keep him at the hospital and hurried to the courtroom instead. There, I lied under oath. I’m quite concerned that things aren’t off to a very promising or healthy start for me in this situation.

Dr. Charles shared some persistent issues he encounters in relationships, such as struggling to distinguish between his professional role as a therapist and himself personally. Jackie criticized him harshly, labeling him as overly confident, which appears to have extinguished any potential romance on Med. Given the swift and careless manner in which things unraveled, it’s reassuring that there seems to be no romantic future for them.

He showed no hesitation whatsoever about mixing ethics with lying under oath, and Jackie didn’t even blink when he confessed to it. Ripley’s violent behavior is certainly not a positive for his career prospects at Gaffney, but Med has often intervened when he steps over the line. Unlike Med, Jackie didn’t challenge Dr. Charles, and I believe it’s better if they don’t inflame the situation too much in the future.

If I didn’t think it might harm him in his career, I’d secretly hope Dr. Charles would reveal Goodwin’s actions, just to see her response. From the preview for the upcoming Chicago Med episode airing on Wednesday, February 26 at 8 p.m. ET, it seems likely that Ripley will face consequences sooner rather than later. Check it out:

It seems that Chicago Med hasn’t exhausted its supply of crises following the massive three-part crossover with the Avengers, and may have even gained some new viewers due to the impressive ratings during the event. Although I’m eager to uncover more about Dr. Charles’ storyline in the latest episode, it would be dishonest if I didn’t mention my anticipation for seeing Dr. Dean Archer under the influence of LSD. As for Ripley, whatever lies ahead, Luke Mitchell is delivering a captivating performance in this dramatic narrative.

On Wednesdays, NBC’s powerhouse series “Med,” followed by “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.” continue to captivate audiences at 8 p.m., 9 p.m., and 10 p.m. ET respectively. Don’t miss a single episode! Catch up on past episodes of all three shows on Peacock.
