Dave Chappelle, fresh off winning his sixth Grammy for Best Comedy Album and having amassed a slew of Emmy Awards without personally accepting them, kicked things off by detailing what made this accolade stand out among the rest.

Recently, I’ve received numerous awards, but the one I received tonight feels particularly significant because it came from an institution that stands for us, people of color, including black people,” Chappelle noted, dressed in a suit and tie, as he accepted his recognition from NAACP president Derrick Johnson.

He commended the NAACP for its efforts in Hollywood, as they strive to enhance the portrayal of Black people’s narratives.

Chappelle stated that many have been gradually dismantling this field to give people like him a platform to share our personal experiences. Every artist here, with each opportunity we receive and every time we’re in the spotlight, on camera or on stage, we are steadily eroding this massive system. Chappelle closed by praising director Stan Lathan, who’s helmed his stand-up specials.

Being able to work on all these comedy projects with you, Stan, has been one of the highlights of my career,” Chappelle expressed. “You’re a national treasure, and you’ve always been one of my idols. You’ve also been an exceptional guide.
