Rachel Zegler Says Backlash for ‘Snow White’ Comments Is “Passion” for the Disney Character

Rachel Zegler addressed the criticism over her past remarks concerning Disney’s live-action Snow White film, explaining that the uproar was fueled by fans’ intense affection for the fairytale princess.

In the upcoming movie, Rachel Zegler has been chosen to play Snow White, a role she was cast for in 2021. However, her selection sparked controversy due to her Colombian heritage, with some critics expressing racial prejudice. The situation escalated when Zegler described the original 1937 film as “dated” and stated that the prince pursues the princess in an unsettling manner, which didn’t sit well with many. Last year, when Zegler criticized Donald Trump’s election, the MAGA supporters announced they would boycott the film upon its release.

In a recent interview with Vogue Mexico (as translated by The Hollywood Reporter), Zegler expressed her understanding of people’s strong affinity for this movie as an intense love for it. She went on to say, “It’s truly an honor to be involved in something that stirs such deep emotions in others.” She concluded by acknowledging that we may not always share the same feelings with everyone around us, but all we can do is offer our very best.

Besides mentioning this, Zegler also expressed that it was a moving and lovely sight to witness young Black girls observing Halle Bailey lead the live-action version of The Little Mermaid in 2023. During the interview, Zegler openly discussed her Colombian lineage.

She acknowledged that the community doesn’t wish to be perceived as a single entity, but being Latino within this field often means striving to embody the entire Latin American diaspora. She has experienced this firsthand, reflecting it in her story and keeping it close to her heart daily.

The actress from “West Side Story” discussed the contrasts one can find when comparing the 19th century and 20th century adaptations of Disney’s “Snow White” movie. She emphasized that the audience should be aware that Disney has skillfully blended the cherished animated version released in 1937 with a modern interpretation for today’s generation, maintaining its original charm while making it fresh and appealing to new viewers.

According to Zegler, this balance stemmed from the princess’ character, as she put it, “Her strength lies within her heart.” She explained, “Snow White doesn’t have any extraordinary powers except for her profound love for humanity, all living beings, and her unwavering faith that there is inherent goodness in everything. I truly believe that such a perspective could greatly benefit the world if it were more embraced.

Snow White releases in theaters March 21.
