As an ardent admirer, I’ve been eagerly keeping tabs on the gradual return of the actor to Hollywood following his legal dispute with Amber Heard. Despite maintaining a low profile in the mainstream media since then, there have been hints of potential roles coming his way, one of which casts him as Satan in the upcoming film by visionary director [insert name here]. After a prolonged silence regarding the project, it appears that work is still ongoing, and filming is set to commence this year.
Previously known as “The Carnival at the End of Days“, the movie seems set to be called simply “Carnival” instead. While the original title wasn’t surprising, given Gilliam’s past works like “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus“, it appears that concise and intriguing is the new focus for this production.
For quite some time, there’s been a lot of talk and speculation about this project, yet solid details have remained elusive. However, in an interview with Box Office Biz, Italian producer Guglielmo Marchetti has finally provided an overdue update on the project.
In early 2025, we’ll kick off an exciting new project that I am particularly proud to be part of. Since my role in distributing ‘Doctor Parnassus’ back in 2009, I’m thrilled to collaborate once more with the legendary director Terry Gilliam. This time, he’ll helm a top-notch cast including Johnny Depp, Jeff Bridges, Jason Momoa, Adam Driver, Asa Butterfield, and Emma Laird. The movie is called ‘Carnival’. For its production, both Italian executive producers and several post-production companies from the USA will contribute. We’ll be utilizing the Cinecittà sound stages for interior shots, and over 3,000 people are expected to work on the film in Italy.
‘Carnival’ Continues Johnny Depp’s Quiet Hollywood Return
Over the past few years, Johnny Depp has been featured in the film “Jeanne Du Barry” and has directed “Modi: Three Days on the Wings of Madness”. It’s worth noting that he will also star in the vampire movie “Day Drinker”, but his role as Satan alongside Jeff Bridges portraying God in “Carnival” might be his most notable recent part. However, as previously mentioned by Gilliam, viewers should brace themselves for potentially offensive portrayals of biblical characters that may not align with traditional depictions.
In the movie, God isn’t portrayed in the traditional sense we’re accustomed to. Instead, God is represented as nature itself, but with the ability to communicate. To bring this concept to life on screen, I’ll need animation due to a scene involving at least fifteen different animals. This could be challenging as it needs to appear realistic, and given the complexity of the task, it’s likely to be costly. However, it promises to be an amusing twist for those who appreciate unconventional portrayals.
The tagline for this movie goes: “God, disillusioned by events on Earth, considers erasing Humankind, but the only one advocating for them is Satan, who persuades God that a pair of young individuals he’s discovered are the fresh Adam and Eve.” This film is bound to stir some strong reactions, especially with Depp involved, so expect more buzz about Carnival as it moves into production.
