Approximately seven years since Daredevil ended on Netflix, a new series titled Daredevil: Born Again has emerged, resurrected like a phoenix from its previous ending.
The road to this point has been a lengthy one, marked by three seasons on Netflix, a resurgence at Disney, and a temporary halt due to writers and actors strikes that ultimately resulted in a comprehensive creative makeover. Dario Scardapane was appointed as the new showrunner, with Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead taking on directorial roles, following Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio’s discussions with Marvel about the direction of the series.
Working for this company was extraordinary because they were open to our ideas and willing to adjust their approach based on our feedback. As Vince and I discussed, they recognized when things weren’t quite right and proposed changes to make it even better. It’s not common for companies to act in such a flexible and innovative manner; it requires a lot of resources and dedication, so it’s truly rewarding to be here today, knowing we achieved the desired outcome.” – Cox shared at the New York premiere of the show on Monday.
D’Onofrio acknowledged the backing they’ve received from everyone, “from the top executives to the workers on the ground,” expressing special gratitude towards their fans who have been “incredibly vocal for us and it’s truly astounding that we’re here, and I must say, a significant part of this is thanks to them.” Cox concurred, stating, “I genuinely believe that without them, we wouldn’t be standing here today.
The show chronicles the journey of blind attorney Matt Murdock, portrayed by Cox, as he champions justice. Meanwhile, Wilson Fisk, once a crime boss, is now vying for the position of New York City’s mayor. It’s been quite some time since the initial airing of the series, and Cox shared that while D’Onofrio held out hope, he was certain they wouldn’t return; however, he’s still in a state of disbelief that we are here today, as it seems almost too good to be true.
Scardapane, who had experience with “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” and “The Punisher,” discussed the difficulties of taking over the show partway. He pointed out that entering a project after others have already worked on it, with existing material to work with, can be both intimidating and thrilling as you try to create context within what’s already there.
(Note: The phrase “on the carpet” is not typically used in this context, but I kept it since it was in the original text. In this context, it seems to imply that Scardapane spoke openly and candidly about his experiences.)
After entering and discovering that our idea might just take off, the excitement kicked in! Now, watching it unfold on screen, seeing it come to life – there’s no better feeling,” the showrunner added. “And then we pause for a moment before diving into filming season two starting this Friday.
Previously, Marvel Television and Disney declared that Jon Bernthal will resume his role as Frank Castle, also known as the anti-hero the Punisher, for a special set to release concurrently with the second season of Daredevil: Born Again in the year 2026. Interestingly, Bernthal’s Punisher character appears in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again, which will be available for streaming on Disney+ from March 4.
