MSNBC Layoffs Set to Impact 99 Union Staffers, Guild Claims

With ongoing restructuring at MSNBC, the union representing the network’s writers and producers claims that approximately 99 positions will be eliminated from their ranks.

On Tuesday, the Writers Guild of America East’s team at MSNBC publicly expressed disappointment over recent layoffs affecting at least nine different programs. The affected shows, as stated by the guild, are “The ReidOut,” “Alex Wagner Tonight,” “The Weekend,” “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” “Ayman Mohyeldin Reports,” “Weekends with Jonathan Capehart,” “The Katie Phang Show,” “Jose Diaz-Balart Reports,” and “Inside with Jen Psaki.” The guild’s statement continues, “This unfortunate news follows a series of announcements revealing significant changes in MSNBC’s programming schedule.

The union representing the affected employees also claimed that the company has informed those marked for job cuts that they could re-apply if positions at MSNBC become available. They demanded an immediate halt to these terminations. “The MSNBC Union asks the Company not to lay off any of the designated employees, but instead to reassign them as necessary,” the union stated. “If employees are not retained, we demand that the Company follow the layoff procedures outlined in the collective bargaining agreement signed with the Union.

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to MSNBC for comment.

If, as you mentioned, 99 employees are actually let go, it would significantly reduce the size of the MSNBC Union. At the time when its first contract was ratified in December 2023, the union comprised almost 300 workers. Employees had chosen to unionize with the Writers Guild of America East in a vote overseen by the National Labor Relations Board back in 2021.

For the past two days, we’ve been informed that MSNBC is initiating large-scale layoffs affecting 99 of our union members across at least nine different programs. This distressing information follows the gradual, agonizing revelation of significant changes to the network’s programming structure.

Despite MSNBC having numerous job vacancies, the company has unfairly required workers scheduled for termination to reapply for their positions in order to keep their jobs. The MSNBC Union is urging the company not to lay off any of the designated employees but instead to reassign them as necessary. If any employees are not retained, we demand that the company abide by the layoff provisions outlined in the collective bargaining agreement it signed with the Union.

Though MSNBC admits there are many job opportunities available, it has unfairly forced workers who are set to be let go to reapply for their positions to remain employed. The MSNBC Union is advocating that the company should not lay off any of the designated employees but rather reassign them as needed. If any employees are not kept on, we demand the company follow the layoff guidelines outlined in the collective bargaining agreement it made with the Union.

The announcement of job cuts occurs amidst the U.S. President’s direct threats towards MSNBC, along with other media outlets, and during a period when it is particularly vital to maintain a fully operational news team to report on a democracy facing danger.
