In the upcoming season 1 of “Daredevil: Born Again,” it seems that Charlie Cox (Daredevil) and Jon Bernthal (The Punisher) keep each other on their toes just like their characters do. As the show is set to premiere on March 4, Cox recently shared an interesting tidbit about Bernthal, revealing that he often rewrites lines right before they start filming. This certainly sounds intriguing and potentially nerve-wracking!
For some time, it’s been confirmed that Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as The Punisher in “Born Again”. Nevertheless, the exact influence he’ll exert on the plot remains uncertain. Although the specific details are yet to be revealed, we do have insights about the impression Bernthal (as Frank Castle) made on set, as Cox reminisced about a call from him suggesting changes for a scene during a press conference that our sister site, GamesRadar, covered: a conversation that took place behind the scenes.
During this season, there was a particular scene that stirred his emotions deeply. He became so engrossed in it, as if it were a personal matter, almost like an emotional burden. The night before the scene, he contacted me and explained that certain lines didn’t resonate with him at his current stage. He felt the need to tweak them slightly. He shared his intended delivery for those lines, expressing his desire to convey them in a way that was authentic to him.
Cox shared his excitement about having Bernthal in the “Born Again” cast and enjoys working alongside him. Watching the actor adlib scenes, create lines, and act spontaneously sounds like a blast. However, as this tale unfolded, it appeared somewhat tense, as the Daredevil star recounted an incident involving his co-star’s arrival on set after that call:
Originally, he modified some parts of the script, essentially creating his own unique content. This necessitated my adjustments and learning fresh material, which I’m perfectly fine with given his exceptional talent. However, on the set, he didn’t utter any of those revised lines; instead, he improvised an entirely new sequence of words. And in that moment, I found myself thinking, “Okay…
Given Charlie Cox and Jon Bernthal have portrayed Daredevil and The Punisher for quite some time now, it’s reasonable to assume they understand these characters well. Consequently, the idea of working together in a flexible manner seems appealing. However, there’s a tiny bit of apprehension within me about not being aware of my co-star’s next move.
It’s evident that Charlie Cox thoroughly enjoyed working with The Bear actor, as he spoke fondly of him and his upcoming roles in the series set to air on the 2025 TV schedule. Although Cox didn’t reveal details, he hinted at how remarkable Bernthal’s character development is this season, describing it as an iconic arc.
1) He boasts some truly fantastic sequences, possibly legendary moments. Filming these scenes is simply delightful! There seems to be a stark contrast between Jon and Charlie, but Daredevil and Frank share more similarities than differences. This makes the performance all the more intriguing. During scenes where I act as Daredevil alongside Frank, he manages to bring forth a Daredevil that is both intimidating and exhilarating. I believe this dynamic is skillfully crafted within the script itself.
I’m really looking forward to this comment, as I’m a fan of the original Netflix series and the dynamic between Cox and Bernthal’s characters. What makes it even more exciting is learning that they were improvising on set and working well together. This knowledge adds to my anticipation because it suggests that Frank and Matt’s reunion will be significant, filled with action, and as the Daredevil actor put it, “could potentially be iconic.
It appears that Matt and Frank’s storyline this season is bound to be thrilling. Moreover, the early reactions from fans towards “Daredevil: Born Again” have been overwhelmingly positive, so it might be wise to ensure our Disney+ subscriptions are active and ready. I doubt we would want to miss even a single moment of this eagerly awaited return to Hell’s Kitchen.
