Why Robert De Niro’s ‘Zero Day’ is a Must-Watch Despite the Critics’ Backlash!

It seems that despite negative criticism, the TV series debut of Robert De Niro, titled “Zero Day,” has proven invincible to bad reviews. This political thriller premiered on February 20, 2025, and has taken the top spot on Netflix’s global chart, surpassing the popular show “American Murder: Gabby Petito.” In the U.S., it ranks second to the three-part miniseries about Gabby Petito.

Over the past week, “Zero Day” has been ranked either first or among the top 10 shows globally on Netflix. Yet, critics have shown less enthusiasm for Robert De Niro’s television debut. As of now, it has a 54% rating from critics and 55% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, which is unusual as both groups don’t often agree on their reviews. It’s worth noting that “Zero Day” receives a 7 out of 10 average rating on IMDb, based on over 14,000 user reviews.

According to MovieWeb’s Matt Mahaler, the initial episode might have turned some viewers away due to its poor quality. Yet, he advises those who gave up on the show to reconsider and watch subsequent episodes instead.

Following a distressing initial installment, “Zero Day” emerges as an intriguingly crafted, suspenseful tale with subtle reflections of contemporary political unease. Its conclusion is commendable for its integrity, while certain character outcomes are equally resolute.

‘Zero Day’ Features an Intriguing Plot and Excellent Cast

Despite some unfavorable opinions, the series titled Zero Day boasts a captivating narrative. In its debut episode, an occurrence labeled “Zero Day” occurs, causing all communication systems to fail exclusively within the U.S. However, this incident ceases shortly after, leaving behind a horrific trail of destruction – including downed planes and derailed trains, a plummeting stock market, and widespread chaos. Thousands perish in the aftermath. Notably, devices such as phones and computers display a chilling warning: “This will happen again.” It’s evident that this event was deliberately engineered for nationwide devastation.

Presently, President Evelyn Mitchell (Angela Bassett) summons former President George Mullen (De Niro) to head the “Zero Day Commission,” an initiative aimed at uncovering those responsible for the attack on America. As is typical of political dramas, this series boasts numerous unexpected turns and intricate storylines that maintain viewer interest.

The main cast is impressive, featuring Jesse Plemmons, Lizzy Caplan, Connie Britton, Joan Allen, and Matthew Modine alongside De Niro and Bassett. However, it appears that Robert De Niro may struggle to keep pace in this series, as suggested by Mahler’s review: “It’s tough to write, but De Niro seems somewhat misplaced in this role, particularly as the lead of Zero Day.

If the buzz around “Zero Day” persists and it continues to captivate viewers globally on Netflix, there’s a chance we might see a second season. It’s not unheard of; “The Penguin,” initially planned as a one-off miniseries, turned out to be such a critical and ratings success for HBO that they’re now considering a second installment.

Robert De Niro, along with co-creators Eric Newman and Noah Oppenheim, appear open to another season of their show, although it was designed to conclude a full narrative. As for De Niro’s thoughts, he stated:

I can’t say for certain if there might be a second season, but it could certainly provide an intriguing sequel to the story we’ve been telling so far. Of course, many possibilities exist and things are moving quickly, but it’s not impossible. With Eric, Noah, and co-creator Mike Schmidt, they have the potential to create something truly exceptional. We all share that belief.

Zero Day is now streaming on Netflix.
