As a cinephile, I can’t help but marvel at the meteoric rise of TV titan Taylor Sheridan, who has undeniably become one of the most captivating forces on the small screen. The creator, writer, director, and producer behind the phenomenal success of “Yellowstone” continues to weave his magic by crafting enthralling prequels and sequels centered around the iconic Dutton family. In 2022, Sheridan recruited Hollywood legends Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren for his Western drama series 1923, a sequel that delves deeper into the tumultuous lives of Jacob and Cara Dutton as they struggle to maintain their expansive ranch amidst an onslaught of threats in various forms.
1923, boasting the extra skills of actors such as Brandon Sklenar, Julia Schlaepfer, and Timothy Dalton, was undeniably a massive success, captivating enthusiastic viewers. The premiere episode drew in 7.4 million viewers, making it Paramount+’s record-breaking debut to date. The 27-year-old Cole Brings Plenty portrayed sheepherder Pete Plenty Clouds during the show’s first season. Regrettably, following his untimely passing in 2024, the role was re-cast; let us delve into the series and the story of Brings Plenty.
Taylor Sheridan’s Sensational ‘Yellowstone’ Spin-Off
Legendary actors Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are teaming up for Taylor Sheridan’s intense prequel series to his hit TV show Yellowstone, titled 1923. This gripping Western drama is not only a prequel but also a sequel to another one of Sheridan’s successful productions, 1883. The compelling original narrative revolves around the Dutton family, specifically Jacob and Cara Dutton, as they struggle to maintain their Montana homestead amidst a rapidly changing nation. They encounter numerous obstacles such as the onset of the Great Depression, looming drought threats, and complications stemming from Prohibition.
The determined and loyal couple took on the responsibility of raising their nephews, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and John Sr. (James Badge Dale), since they didn’t have any children themselves. John stayed to aid his uncle on the ranch and eventually became an indispensable assistant. Spencer grappled with the horrors he experienced during World War I and sought solace in Africa, where he pursued and hunted large animals. There, he encountered a carefree British woman named Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer), whom he swiftly fell for.
In the first season of this phenomenal show, I found myself deeply moved by the character of Pete Plenty Clouds, played by Cole Brings Plenty. This uncle of Hank, a shepherd from Broken Rock Reservation, was portrayed by Michael Greyeyes. His story intertwined with that of Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves), who had escaped an abusive boarding school and sought solace at Pete’s place.
Cole Brings Plenty’s Tragic Passing & His Impact on ‘1923’
In the budding stages of his acting career in Hollywood, Cole Brings Plenty secured the role of Pete Plenty Clouds. Prior to this, he had made appearances in Western series such as “Into the Wild Frontier” and “The Tall Tales of Jim Bridger.” A relative of Yellowstone alum Mo Brings Plenty (renowned for portraying Mo in more than forty episodes of the Kevin Costner-led hit), Cole’s life was prematurely ended at 27 years old. On April 5, 2024, he was discovered deceased following a disappearance and being named under investigation for domestic violence on March 31.
Before the tragic revelation, several of Cole’s 1923 co-stars, such as Brandon Sklenar and Amina Nieves, showed their support by reaching out to the Brings Plenty family and using social media to ask for information about his location. Yellowstone’s Cole Hauser also made efforts to spread the word and raise awareness. However, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in Kansas stated that there was “no sign of foul play” in Cole’s death, a fact confirmed by his father, Joe Brings Plenty Sr., who poignantly shared: “I learned this week how many people recognized the goodness in Cole’s heart and loved him.
I chose not to disclose the cause of Brings Plenty’s passing publicly, and his funeral took place on April 14, 2024, in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. To honor his family’s privacy and rights, a judge decided to seal the court documents pertaining to the investigation into the actor’s death, including the autopsy report. Instead of writing the character out of 1923, our showrunners made the decision to recast Pete Plenty Clouds, with Jeremy Gauna stepping into the role. This allowed us to conclude Brings Plenty’s storyline in a fitting manner. As a tribute, we displayed his photo during the Season 2 premiere alongside a heartfelt “In Memoriam” message.
Gauna, an actor of Native American and Mexican descent, proudly represents the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. His casting in the show “American Primeval” earned the approval of Bring Plenty’s family, with the star expressing, “I carry a lot of responsibility, but I gratefully accept it. It’s a blessing.” Before the second season’s premiere, Brings Plenty’s close friend and on-screen love interest, Aminah Nieves (also known as Coco), shared with TV Insider that recasting the character was “an incredibly positive decision” but that the process was still tough and emotional.
He’s always with us, a constant presence. His enthusiasm and joy were palpable as he joined our grand project. Instead of dwelling on sorrow, I chose to remember him by celebrating his life and also acknowledging Jeremy Gauna for his courage in carrying such a heavy responsibility, taking over from Coco. And he did it all with such elegance.
