At the annual ceremony, the In Memoriam segment often sparks debate. Critics argue that the focus is too heavily on the performers paying tribute rather than those who have sadly passed away. There are also concerns about inappropriate song selections, overcrowding names into a small space, and so forth. This segment seems to attract the most criticism out of all parts of the ceremony. However, the 2025 ceremony made one of the most significant mistakes a memorial segment can make: it neglected to include several prominent film stars in the montage.
Although Quincy Jones received a grand farewell, other notable figures in the industry did not get the same recognition. A significant absence was that of horror icon Tony Todd, who sadly passed away on November 6, 2024. Similarly, Olivia Hussey, best known for her role as Juliet Capulet in Franco Zeffirelli’s “Romeo and Juliet” and numerous other cult films such as the original “Black Christmas,” was also overlooked following her death on December 27, 2024. These and many other prominent names were unfortunately not acknowledged during the 2025 Oscar tribute.
Plenty of actors were left out of this year’s In Memoriam Segment
Despite Michelle Trachtenberg, famously recognized for her TV roles, leaving an indelible mark in films such as “Mysterious Skin,” “Ice Princesses,” and “Road Trip,” her overlooked posthumous recognition following her passing on February 26, 2025, adds to the sadness. Similarly disregarded was Shannen Doherty, another former teen star who achieved prominence both in television and cinema, particularly through the cult classic “Heathers.” Regrettably, she passed away on July 13, 2024.
In a somewhat unusual omission, French actor Alain Delon, renowned for his roles in numerous French films that earned him international heartthrob status, was left out of the montage, along with Bernard Hill, who played significant parts in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy as Théoden and Captain Edward Smith in “Titanic”. Even venerable Hollywood icons like Barbara Rush, famed for her work in creature features, were overlooked during this montage. Perhaps next year, the Academy will avoid lengthy musical tributes to past franchises and instead honor all its departed members appropriately.
