During discussions about their latest Netflix release, “The Electric Slate“, the Russo brothers (Joe and Anthony) hinted at potential plans for a follow-up to their controversial action movie, “The Gray Man“, featuring Ryan Gosling.
In a chat with The Playlist, the Russo Brothers mentioned potential plans for a follow-up to the film featuring Gosling and Chris Evans (The Gray Man), which premiered on Netflix in July 2022. Due to mixed reviews and a subsequent halt in production, there are no immediate plans for a sequel. Additionally, the directing duo have their hands full with upcoming projects like Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, keeping them occupied for the next few years. Nevertheless, Anthony subtly suggested that a sequel might be in store at some point in the future.
There’s definitely some ongoing curiosity, but it seems we’re all facing challenges with scheduling, particularly between myself, Joe, and Mr. Gosling and others.
The film “The Gray Man” is adapted from Mark Greaney’s novel and focuses on a CIA agent portrayed by Ryan Gosling. This character discovers hidden corruptions within the agency, which leads his ruthless ex-partner (Chris Evans) to place a price on his head. There was much anticipation surrounding the movie’s release; however, it fell short of expectations.
The ratings for this movie on Rotten Tomatoes are quite contrasting; while critics only gave it a 45% rating, viewers seem to adore it, giving it an impressive 90%. Netflix and the Russo Brothers had aimed to create a franchise from the film, but the mixed response seems to have put plans for a sequel on ice.
Previously, Joe mentioned that they were brainstorming concepts for “The Gray Man 2”, however, both of them have a packed schedule in movie production.
Currently, we’re exploring ideas we believe will shape our character in a positive way. At present, we are focusing on refining these concepts. To put it simply, you’re handling numerous tasks simultaneously, so it’s crucial to allocate your time effectively for each one.
The Russo Brothers Remain Very Busy
After the premiere of “Avengers: Endgame,” the Russo Brothers established their own production company, AGBO, and have since directed or produced numerous successful films. Coming up on Netflix on March 14 is their latest project, “The Electric Slate,” starring Millie Bobbie Brown (known for her role in “Stranger Things”) and Chris Pratt. The Russo Brothers are now preparing to start production on “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars.” In an interview with The Playlist, the duo explained their decision to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Joe stating, “The idea for a story that we felt was ‘That’s a really, really interesting story to tell'” was what drew them back.
However, it’s not just a reunion with the Avengers world that they have planned. Their extensive lineup of upcoming films and shows also includes the third installment in the hit Extraction series, featuring Marvel veteran Chris Hemsworth, as well as a TV spinoff focusing on Omar Sy.
Among the various productions currently in the works are another season of “Citadel”, a television series inspired by the comic book “Quantum and Woody”, a live-action adaptation of Disney’s “Hercules” directed by Guy Ritchie, a fresh take on “The Thomas Crown Affair”, along with numerous other films and shows. However, please remember that not every project in development will ultimately be brought to fruition.
