Danny DeVito is without a doubt a living legend, gaining widespread recognition in the late 1970s through his side-splitting portrayal of Louie De Palma on Taxi. Counting the number of his unforgettable roles requires more than fingers. He boasts an impressive legacy, yet to the cast of Abbott Elementary during their crossover episodes with It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, he was merely known as the spokesperson for Jersey Mike’s Subs – a fact that was entirely unfamiliar to them.
A few weeks ago, Rob McElhenney shared his experience filming special episodes as a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”. He wasn’t taken aback when he realized that the young actors from “Abbott Elementary” didn’t recognize him, but they were well-aware of Danny DeVito’s specific work. As McElhenney put it.
The majority of the children were snapping photos with Danny, and we responded, “Of course…” It turned out, though, that they recognized Jersey Mike, not Danny. So wherever you’d hear, ‘Jersey Mike, Jersey Mike. That’s Jersey Mike. I think that’s Jersey Mike.’
Most kids were busy photographing with Danny, and we replied, “Of course…” It transpired, however, that they knew who Jersey Mike was, not Danny. Hence, wherever you heard, ‘Jersey Mike, Jersey Mike. That’s Jersey Mike. I think that’s Jersey Mike.’
Or even simpler:
Many kids were snapping pictures with Danny. But it turned out they knew him as Jersey Mike. So whenever someone said, “Jersey Mike, Jersey Mike. That’s Jersey Mike. I think that’s Jersey Mike.
Throughout his acting career, Danny DeVito has been known for several family-oriented films such as the well-received adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda” and Tim Burton’s version of “Dumbo”. Yet, it appears that these roles hold little significance to children compared to the commercials he has produced for Jersey Mike’s. In fact, it seems they are under the impression that his name is actually Jersey Mike.
It’s clear that the young actors from Abbott Elementary aren’t typically viewers of Rob DeVito’s work in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, due to its mature content. However, it was mentioned by Rob McElhenney that there was one child who recognized the show, and his mother didn’t appreciate her parental image being associated with such content.
There was a single boy present among us, requesting snapshots with everyone, and it was evident that his mother felt embarrassed due to allowing her son to watch the show ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.’
Last year, an exciting crossover episode between “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Abbott Elementary,” titled “Volunteers,” aired as the ninth episode of the fourth season of “Abbott Elementary” on ABC in January. However, only half of this television event has been shown so far. The Season 17 premiere of “It’s Always Sunny” is set to reveal the remaining portion and offer a fresh perspective on the storyline we have already witnessed. No specific premiere date for the episode has been announced yet, but it is expected to air in June.
In the meantime, before the much-anticipated crossover between “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Abbott Elementary”, why not revisit the “Volunteers” episode using your Hulu subscription, along with all the other episodes from both series? Enjoy the rewatch!
