After hearing that Max is creating a TV adaptation of “Crazy Rich Asians”, Jon M. Chu (who previously directed the hit film before moving on to his two “Wicked” movies) has shared a sneak peek at what we can expect from this upcoming small-screen project.
Chu explained to The Hollywood Reporter during the Oscars that we required additional space for the project, and that was simply a fact. We’ve repeatedly refined the movie, and we’re still fine-tuning a version that I can’t discuss yet, but the TV environment gives us the flexibility to utilize all the characters.
Last week’s exciting news has me thrilled! Chu and Adele Lim, the film’s co-writer who parted ways with the planned sequel in 2019 due to unequal pay, are now back on board for the series. Notably, Lim will serve as showrunner this time around. Back then, she shared with THR that Warner Bros. was offering her a significantly lower salary compared to Peter Chiarelli, her co-writer and a white male colleague.
Plans for the sequel of the movie, featuring Michelle Yeoh, Constance Wu, and Henry Golding, have been uncertain for quite some time now. However, director Jon M. Chu hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of another film just yet.

As a dedicated gamer, I expressed my thoughts in this way: “I’m not sure if it’s a prequel or spin-off, but it seemed evident that each character required more depth beyond what a movie could offer. So, we’re diving back into the story now, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us.” And guess who’s making a comeback? None other than Adele! It’s going to be an exciting journey ahead.
The show will be inspired by Kevin Kwan’s books – “Crazy Rich Asians”, “China Rich Girlfriend”, and “Rich People Problems” – with the storyline revolving around Rachel Chu, a native New Yorker portrayed by Wu, who joins her long-term partner Nick (played by Golding) for his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Upon arrival, she discovers that Nick’s family is exceptionally wealthy, much to her surprise. Actors like Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Jimmy O. Yang, and Ronny Chieng were part of the initial film cast as well.
