It seems that Netflix’s new sports show, Running Point, is dominating its competition. Debuting on February 27, 2025, the series from Mindy Kaling, creator and star of The Office and The Sex Lives of College Girls, has quickly become a fan favorite and reached the top of U.S. streaming charts in just five days. With its success soaring high, we might need to come up with a few more basketball-themed phrases to fully convey it!
Right now, as a devoted cinephile, I can confidently say that “Running Point” is the top show streaming in the U.S. on Netflix (as of March 3, 2025). It seems that love and basketball aren’t mutually exclusive after all! This enticing blend of workplace romantic comedy and sports drama has certainly captivated viewers, demonstrating a demand for humor, athleticism, and perhaps a touch of romance. And with an all-star comedy cast like the one “Running Point” boasts, it’s no wonder why it’s currently leading the pack in my list of shows to watch.

‘Running Point’ Is A Hit Thanks To Its Cast And Creative Team
The Netflix press site announces that “Running Point” adds a unique spin to the underdog comedy genre, as created by Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen. According to the series’ official summary:
In a twist of events when my brother’s scandal led to his resignation, I found myself appointed as president of the iconic Los Angeles Waves professional basketball team, and my family’s cherished business. Eager and frequently underestimated, I am determined to show my skeptical brothers, the board, and the broader sports world that I was the ideal candidate for this role.
Isn’t it a familiar story though: Brothers often underestimate or doubt their lone sister’s talents in business and sports simply because she is female. Yet, this series manages to steer clear of overtly preachy feminism while still maintaining a strong female lead. It doesn’t strive for groundbreaking social commentary, but instead offers a delightful blend of comedy that leaves you cheering for the characters to triumph.
In terms of characters, there are numerous ones to mention. If the Kate Hudson factor didn’t convince you, the series boasts an ensemble cast with notable resumes, including Brenda Song (“The Last Showgirl”, “Dollface”), Drew Tarver (“The Other Two”), Scott MacArthur (“The Righteous Gemstones”), Fabrizio Guido (“Perry Mason”, “Mr. Iglesias”), Jay Ellis (“Insecure”), Toby Sandeman (“The Game”), Chet Hanks (son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson), Max Greenfield (“New Girl”), Keyla Monterroso Mejia (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), Roberto Sanchez (“Palm Royale”), Uche Agada (“Rise”), Dane DiLiegro (“Prey”), and Justin Theroux (with a diverse acting portfolio).
If the fact that Running Point has received positive responses isn’t enough to make you want to watch it, perhaps its impressive review ratings will be? On Rotten Tomatoes, Running Point currently boasts an audience score of 91% on the Popcornmeter and a 76% score from critics on the Tomatometer. This suggests that everyone seems to be appreciating the laid-back, humorous, and entertaining style that Running Point delivers. So why wait any longer? Stop reading this and give it a try – I promise you won’t regret it! (And no, I won’t make another sports pun – I only played JV basketball in high school because I was required to be on a sports team!)
