Paul Wesley Reveals Which ‘Vampire Diaries’ Storyline “Should’ve Never Made It Out of the Writers Room”

[This story contains spoilers for The Vampire Diaries.]

Could it be that even Paul Wesley was team Klaroline?

Although a significant number of “Vampire Diaries” enthusiasts appreciated the romantic relationship between Stefan Salvatore (played by Wesley) and Caroline Forbes (portrayed by Candice King), affectionately known as Steroline, towards the show’s conclusion, Wesley himself might not entirely concur with this sentiment.

In a recent installment of “Hot Ones Versus”, the actor was posed a question by his ex-cast member and present partner in Brothers Bond Bourbon, Ian Somerhalder. He was asked to select “a plotline you believe shouldn’t have progressed beyond the writers’ room” from the popular series that aired for eight seasons between 2009 and 2017.

Following Nina Dobrev’s departure from the series after season six, there was a consensus that Stefan needed a new romantic interest. Eventually, it turned out to be Caroline, and they ended up getting married, correct?” Wesley confirmed.

Somerhalder admitted that it seemed a bit contrived, but still found it endearing. And Wesley agreed, calling it adorable.

Initially in the TV series “The Vampire Diaries,” a love triangle emerged involving Stefan, Elena Gilbert (Dobrev) and Damon Salvatore (Somerhalder). However, Wesley’s character found his romantic match in Caroline instead, transitioning from friends to lovers over the course of the fantasy-filled storyline. They got married at the end of season eight, just before Stefan met his demise.

Nevertheless, Steroline wasn’t the only popular on-screen pairing from the series. Fans were equally smitten with Elena and Damon, affectionately referred to as Delena, throughout the show’s run. Additionally, the chemistry between Caroline and Klaus Mikaelson, often called Klaroline, was another favorite among fans.

Last year, Julie Plec, one of the creators of “Vampire Diaries”, shared with The Hollywood Reporter about the intricate process of managing various romantic pairs on screen, and also hinted that the beloved couple Steroline had been developing since season two.

Establishing a successful TV relationship involves a mix of logic (math), emotional connection (chemistry), and audience response,” she clarified. “At the close of season two, I made the choice that Stefan and Caroline would eventually become a couple, marking the start of a prolonged storyline for them. Regardless of how long it took, whether it was five years or more, my intention was for the series to conclude with them together.

Plec explained, “Just one season after, Klaus unexpectedly appeared. It wasn’t due to any actions taken by us, except for Rebecca Sonnenshine crafting an exceptional monologue. Suddenly, the chemistry between them was so intense that it almost jeopardized our original plan for her and Stefan to be together. As a result, we found ourselves frequently adjusting our strategies, abandoning plans, and trying to find a way to make things work.
