Will Evel Knievel be revving his engines this summer?
Paramount is grappling with deciding whether to cast Leonardo DiCaprio for a biopic about the motorcycle daredevil renowned for leaping over automobiles, fountains, and canyons. Damien Chazelle, fresh off directing Babylon and holding a first-look contract with Paramount, is set to lead this film project.
In this version, I’ve tried to rephrase the original sentence in a more conversational tone, making it easier for readers to understand the information presented.
For several months now, negotiations have been underway, starting towards the end of last year, and during this period, attention is shifting elsewhere. Adrien Brody, fresh off his best actor Oscar win for his role in The Brutalist, might be one of those biding their time on the sidelines.
Without any confirmed job offer yet, it’s reported that Brody had discussions with Chazelle regarding the character of Shelly Saltman – the author and sports promoter who endured a brutal assault by Knievel using an aluminum bat.
Last year, Chazelle was working on a prison project, but he changed direction when Knievel started gaining traction and attracted DiCaprio’s attention. It was beneficial that the project had a script by William Monahan, who wrote DiCaprio’s Academy Award-winning crime film, “The Departed.
Reports indicate that if negotiations are successful with Leonardo DiCaprio, it’s likely that filming will commence as early as this summer. However, Paramount has declined to comment on the matter.
In the 1970s, Evel Knievel was a hugely popular cultural icon, known for his daring motorcycle acrobatics, fearless attitude, and readiness to risk his bones and life in his jumps. His persona – complete with stars and cape – came to symbolize edgy, death-defying feats, which he leveraged into television spots and merchandising.
Evel Knievel’s composure crumbled, in a literal and metaphorical sense, when he assaulted Saltman, who was then an executive at 20th Century Fox and also the writer of an unsparing biography about the daredevil. The altercation left Saltman severely wounded, while Knievel served jail time, lost his sponsorship deals, and eventually filed for bankruptcy.
Leonardo DiCaprio recently starred in “Killers of the Flower Moon” directed by Martin Scorsese, and will soon lead Paul Thomas Anderson’s mystery film. The versatile actor has a plethora of potential projects to choose from, and he is associated with several high-profile productions currently circulating in Hollywood. One such project is a mob thriller set in Hawaii, which would reunite him with Scorsese and pair him with Dwayne Johnson.
