Contains spoilers for “Chicago Fire” Season 13, Episode 15 — “Too Close”
In the 15th episode of “Chicago Fire”‘s Season 13, NBC has hinted at the death of one character. Could it be Jack Damon (Michael Bradway), who is seen fighting for an escape route in a fire? Or perhaps Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) who helps an injured man to safety after an accident, only to keep him from dangerously wandering into traffic? A clue lies in a scene where Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) visits Chicago Gaffney Medical Center and encounters a tearful Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith).
Indeed, it’s regrettably Monica, Dom’s wife (played by KaDee Strickland), who is the one that passes away in a car accident. This tragic event occurred before their planned anniversary dinner. Devastated by this unexpected turn of events, Dom is left in shock and disbelief, while Dean Archer (Steven Weber) from “Chicago Med” has to confirm her death.
Instead of finding this development an exciting twist, it feels more like a major disappointment, given how little we’ve gotten to know Monica throughout the past season. To add insult to injury, the revelation comes at the end of the episode, leaving viewers puzzled with “what just happened?” feelings. Despite the turmoil between Monica and Dom over her infidelities and potential divorce, it’s hard for us to feel deeply affected by her death since we haven’t seen much of their bond on screen. Moreover, seeing other characters react to her demise when they’ve had limited interaction with her feels strange. All things considered, this may be the most poorly executed stunt death of a recurring character that the show has ever attempted. However, it seems that some fans were touched by her passing, even though it falls short compared to other “Chicago Fire” moments that make fans shed tears.
Fans of Chicago Fire were fairly moved by Monica’s death
Fans had a range of reactions towards how the show portrayed Monica Pascal’s demise. Many were deeply saddened, mostly for Dom’s sake, with u/camy_23 commenting, “It’s heart-wrenching to see Pascal waiting for Monica, knowing she won’t return.” On the other hand, u/keepingitreal-84 voiced their disapproval of the writers’ decision to kill off Monica to create more storylines for Dom, stating, “The writers’ choice to inflict such tragedy upon Pascal in this manner is perplexing and raises concerns about their sensitivity.
Many viewers found the pacing of Monica’s accident and subsequent demise to be problematic, with some feeling that it was hurriedly concluded. As u/Vero_IPD put it, “I had a feeling she was going to be written off from the teaser, so the entire episode I was on edge, waiting for it to build up to her death, and then in the last 2 minutes they just rushed it…” Similarly, u/januarysdaughter noted that Monica’s death was somewhat predictable based on the opening credits: “Guest star: Steven Weber. Uh oh.” It appears that Dom may have a stronger emotional response when “Chicago Fire” returns from its two-week hiatus on March 26th.
