Over nearly four decades, the movie “Back to the Future” has sparked numerous fan speculations. While some are simply imaginative explorations of time travel, others can delve into quite a somber realm. One such theory that’s often discussed is the idea that Marty McFly might have died multiple times throughout the series.
However, a different, more ominous theory exists as well, which paints Doc Brown in a somewhat suspicious light. This theory is so dark that even the actor who played him, Christopher Lloyd, has firmly dismissed its plausibility.

Another, much more somber theory suggests that Doc Brown may not be as innocent as he seems. In fact, this idea is so troubling that the actor who portrayed him, Christopher Lloyd, has flatly denied it could ever happen.

The “Marty Martyr” Back to the Future fan theory is so dark, Christopher Lloyd had to set the record straight

Known online as the “Marty Martyr” theory, this idea has been floating around for a very long time now, and it centers on a moment near the end of the first Back to the Future film, when Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) goes back to 1985. In the film, because he knows Doc (Lloyd) was shot in the Twin Pines Mall parking lot by Libyan terrorists, Marty secretly programs the DeLorean to go back to 1985 ten minutes earlier, so he can hopefully save Doc’s life. The DeLorean breaks down on arrival in 1985, leaving Marty to run to the mall just in time to watch Doc get shot and see his own alternate self climb into the DeLorean and leave 1985, presumably for 1955.
As per a popular theory posted on Reddit, since Doctor Emmett Brown cautioned against Marty McFly ever encountering his own past or future selves (a concept that’s subtly addressed in “Back to the Future Part II”), it is believed that Doc took measures to prevent the original Marty from crossing paths with an alternate version of himself who also traveled back to 1955. If they both returned to the same time and location, they might have collided. To avoid this potentially hazardous paradox, according to this fan theory, Doctor Brown supposedly equipped the second DeLorean (the one Marty watches from a distance at the end of “Back to the Future”) to either be destroyed or to travel to a time when Marty could not return. In essence, this theory suggests that Doc intentionally caused the demise of the second instance of 1985 Marty, allowing the first version of Marty to safely return to 1985 without encountering his other self.
Doc was well-prepared because he had advance knowledge that he would be shot in 1985 – thanks to a letter from Marty warning him about it. This foresight led Doc to wear a bulletproof vest, ensuring his survival. It’s also plausible that he anticipated Marty returning early from 1955, and took additional precautions for the alternate version of Marty as well. After all, if Marty hadn’t altered the DeLorean in 1955, he would have returned to exactly the same moment in 1985, thus avoiding the conundrum of two Martys existing simultaneously.

In a 2018 interview with the CBC, Lloyd expressed his thoughts on the concept: While it may materialize in various ways, this idea is quite ominous, intensifying the mad scientist persona of Doc Brown even more. Yet, no matter how unconventional Doc’s actions might appear, for Lloyd, taking Marty’s life, regardless of whether it’s an alternate version or not, would be a step too far for his character.
In an interview with the CBC in 2018, Lloyd shared his feelings about the idea: Although it could manifest differently, this notion carries a dark undertone, making Doc Brown’s mad scientist persona even more intense. However, no matter how eccentric Doc’s behavior might seem, for Lloyd, killing Marty, whether it’s the original or an alternate version of him, would be a line Lloyd’s character wouldn’t cross.
Lloyd stated, “You wouldn’t want to encounter your own self at another time because something would likely go awry and the entire cosmos could crumble.” It’s just common sense. However, Doc wouldn’t risk sending Marty into a deadly situation in any circumstances. He simply couldn’t bear such consequences.
You’ve seen it all: Doc Brown is willing to trick dangerous individuals for plutonium, risk his life chasing scientific discoveries, and even jeopardize Marty by venturing into unknown time travel realms, but he draws the line at deliberately taking the life of an alternate version of his teenage buddy.
