Actor Michael B. Jordan is at present devising a contemporary adaptation of “The Thomas Crown Affair,” a tale originally depicted in 1968 and 1999 heist films bearing the same name. Following an extensive selection process, it appears that Jordan has identified his female co-star for this upcoming production. Actress Taylor Russell, who gained recognition through her roles in “Waves,” both “Escape Room” movies, and “Bones and All,” is now part of the team.
According to Deadline, Jordan chose Russell to be his co-star in the upcoming heist movie. The casting process was challenging, as many skilled actors tried out for the role. Despite this stiff competition, Russell secured the part after a screen test with Jordan. She will play the role of the investigator pursuing a wealthy thief, a character previously portrayed by Faye Dunaway in 1968 and Rene Russo in 1999.
In the film, Jordan serves not only as a producer through his Outlier Society label together with Elizabeth Raposo, but he also takes on the role of director, following the screenwriting task given to Drew Pearce. This assignment came after Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson worked on the initial script drafts. Jordan previously made his debut as a director in the 2023 sequel Creed III.
The forthcoming “The Thomas Crown Affair” marks the third adaptation of the same narrative. The initial film, debuted in 1968, featured Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway in the lead roles. Critics praised it, and it earned two nominations at the Academy Awards. The 1999 iteration starred Pierce Brosnan and Russo as the leads, raking in a global box office total of $124 million. Both films share a similar storyline, chronicling a wealthy individual who has grown tired of his ability to acquire anything he desires. He transforms into a high-profile art thief, stealing priceless masterpieces. Initially, an insurance investigator suspects the rich man’s involvement in the latest theft, but as she delves deeper, she finds herself falling for him.
Could This Be Amazon MGM Studios’ “Other” Bond?
As a cinephile, I must confess my excitement over the latest chapter in the thrilling saga of “The Thomas Crown Affair,” proudly presented by Amazon MGM Studios – the studio that has recently added the iconic James Bond franchise to its impressive roster. Previous installments of this timeless heist story were also brought to life under the MGM banner, and I eagerly anticipate the reinterpretation of this classic tale by the talented Michael B. Jordan.
According to Deadline’s article, there may be plans for Jordan to create a significant spin-off series under Amazon MGM’s creative wing, similar to the international spy franchise. Although these franchises have vastly different themes and settings, it’s not surprising that Pierce Brosnan, who played James Bond in the ’90s, starred in the 1999 adaptation of “The Thomas Crown Affair.” Recently, Brosnan expressed his good wishes to Jordan for the upcoming remake.
Wow, Michael is incredibly talented as an actor, and it’s his to grasp and excel in any role he chooses. Indeed, why not? Heist movies are my favorite, which is why I decided to remake them during the era of MGM and James Bond. So, go ahead and good luck! I truly hope he achieves great success.
