Sony Reveals ‘Resident Evil’ Fall 2026 Release Date

Constantly’s “Resident Evil” series is being revived for a franchise refresh under the guidance of Zach Cregger, who has previously worked on “Barbarian” and “Weapon.” The remake, inspired by Capcom’s widely acclaimed horror video game, will continue its journey within Sony.

In this arrangement, Cregger will pen the script and take on the director’s role in collaboration with Shay Hatten as a co-writer. The production of the film is being handled by Constantin Film, along with Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon, and PlayStation Productions. Cregger has recently produced this year’s release Companion, and he’s also slated to write, direct, and produce the horror film Weapons, starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, which is scheduled for a January 2026 premiere at Warner Bros.

Initially, the Resident Evil series started as a PlayStation video game back in 1994, and it was subsequently adapted for other gaming platforms. Over the years, six films based on the franchise have been released, starting with one featuring Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez that hit theaters in 2002. This was followed by Resident Evil: Apocalypse in 2004, Resident Evil: Extinction in 2007, Resident Evil: Afterlife in 2010, Resident Evil: Retribution in 2012, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in 2017, and most recently, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in 2021. Collectively, the franchise has earned over $1.2 billion USD worldwide.

Resident Evil from Sony premieres on September 18, 2026.
