1923 Season 2 Episode 3 Recap: Danger Looms as Duttons Face Winter’s Wrath

In the second installment of 1923, viewers are plunged headlong into the heart of the Dutton storyline. Characters, whether they’re part of the Dutton family in Montana or distant from home, grapple with the pursuit of safety and stability. Meanwhile, others in their orbit face similar challenges.

Episodes 1 and 2 of 1923‘s second season, called “The Killing Season” and “The Rapist Is Winter,” respectively, presented the dangers faced by everyone in the Dutton’s sphere of influence and vicinity. Episode 3, “Wrap Thee in Terror,” ventures a bit farther from the wilds of the Dutton ranch but is equally clear with its ominous title what’s in store.

The force of winter continues to beat down on the Duttons, leading Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) to say what everyone is feeling in their bones — the winter does not seem like it will ever end. Here’s a look at what happened in “Wrap Thee in Terror.”

The Storm Is Still Raging for the Duttons

Following the storm, Jacob Dutton and Zane Davis (portrayed by Brian Geraghty) contemplate pushing forward with their journey. Jacob expresses concerns about Zane’s ability to travel due to his injuries, but the resilient farmhand insists that he can manage as long as he gets a chance to rest on a horse. The group ultimately decides to set off and make their way towards the Dutton ranch at the earliest opportunity.

At the Dutton ranch, the solemn image of a nurse’s body being put into a vehicle for town travel contrasts with Michelle Randolph’s (Elizabeth Stafford) forthcoming injection. She protests, asserting that the wolf wasn’t rabid, but she’s instructed to keep receiving shots. When she resists, Cara Dutton strikes her and refuses to let her mourn any longer. Elizabeth submits but refuses to surrender, opting to stand instead while Cara administers the next injection.

When her spouse comes back, Elizabeth informs him she’s departing and makes him witness her getting her next injection. She sets a condition for him, stating that if he desires to remain her husband, they can’t stay in Montana. Jacob along with his companions reach the Dutton ranch. Fortunately, the physician is still present to care for Zane, but Jacob surveys the scene and delivers a blunt observation that “this winter refuses to relent.” However, the only treatment the doctor can provide for Zane involves drilling into his skull – a procedure he must endure without any painkillers.

Alexandra Finds Out How the Other Half Lives in ‘1923,’ and It’s a Humbling

Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) along with fellow travelers on the English vessel catch sight of New York in the distance, and they’re all eager to reach American soil. However, as Alexandra, who has given up a life of opulence, observes, upper-class passengers are swiftly permitted to disembark, welcomed by loved ones. In contrast, Alexandra, along with other immigrants on board, is bound for Ellis Island instead.

Upon reaching Ellis Island by boat, Alexandra undergoes a lengthy and distressing examination of both her documents and body. This sequence offers an unflinching and poignant portrayal of the entire process, revealing the inhumane treatment that was unfortunately common during this time. Women wept as they were denied entry if pregnant, a rule Alexandra had not been aware of until now. Consequently, she hid her pregnancy from the doctor, but the numerous intrusive examinations eventually exposed it. She was labeled “PG” and summoned for more discussions with yet another medical professional and immigration official.

While pausing between her questions, Alexandra encounters another pregnant immigrant determined to endure whatever necessary to remain in the country. Upon reaching his office, she’s resolved to no longer tolerate mistreatment. He presents her a book of Walt Whitman’s writings as a test of her literacy, yet instead of starting from the beginning, she seeks a fitting excerpt to recite back to him. Subsequently, she criticizes him, points out lipstick on his collar, and with a surprised look on his face, he approves her paperwork.

Setting foot in the bustling New York City, I sought guidance from a friendly newsstand attendant who handed me a map and pointed me towards Grand Central Station. Upon arrival, I bought a ticket to Montana, a place I was warned could be chillingly cold. To ensure my safety and financial security during my solo journey, I shared some essential tips for fellow female travelers.

Everyone Is Being Chased, But It’s Not Clear if an Escape Is Possible

In a nutshell, her query sets in motion a new wave of peril for her, as a foreboding figure is seen tailing her at the train station, which implies that by voicing her apprehension, she might have unwittingly ushered in fresh danger.

While Spencer and Luca were on their way to deliver liquor for Luca’s family, they encountered an obstacle. Fearing for his life, Spencer decided to abandon Luca, handing him a pistol before driving off. Shortly after, Spencer heard gunshots and saw how the liquor agents at the roadblock fatally shot Luca. It was a heartbreaking end for Luca; the immigrant that Spencer had previously convinced not to take his own life, tragically met his demise on that very path.

Teonna’s father, Michael Spears, who goes by Runs His Horse, encounters the landowner of the property his group is currently on. He shares with him that they are open to searching for lost livestock as a means of staying. The landowner suggests payment and even offers food, but he decides to return to his companions. Despite this, they are not yet out of danger as Father Renaud (Sebastian Roche) and Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane) continue their pursuit.

The female marshal we met in Episode 2 witnesses the violence inflicted by these two men on a group of Native Americans earlier in the season, which may serve to reinforce her suspicion that they are ruthless individuals who will stop at nothing to get what they want, and ultimately, no one should stand in their way.

At the end of “Wrap Thee in Terror,” the only thing that’s clear is that danger is still very much nipping at the heels of everyone in and around the Duttons. Jacob and Cara have been reunited, but their plight is far from over. Elizabeth is determined to leave and may take her fiancé with her, while Alexandra and Spencer continue to combat obstacles that keep them apart. Teonna and her group thought they had a brief reprieve from Renaud and Kent, but the audience knows otherwise — although Renaud and Kent have their enemies to contend with on their journey.
