Christina Ricci has had a successful acting career, appearing in numerous well-known films and series since her debut in “Mermaids” (1990). However, there was one role she didn’t get – Mathilda in the iconic 1994 film “Léon: The Professional“, which ultimately went to Natalie Portman. In a recent interview with the YouTube show “First We Feast” (as reported by The Wrap), Ricci shares an unusual reason for missing out on the part: she was considered “too ordinary and healthy”.
It might be unexpected for some, given that Ricci is well-known for her spooky portrayal of Wednesday Addams in the 90’s hit movie, The Addams Family, and its sequel. In conversation with her co-star on Yellowjackets, Melanie Lynskey, she shared the reason behind missing out on her cherished role.
Deep down, I dreamt of starring in the movie ‘Léon: The Professional.’ However, at that age, I seemed ordinary and quite healthy. Oh, how I wished I could’ve been part of that film when I was only twelve.”
Or simply:
“I longed to act in ‘Léon: The Professional,’ but ended up appearing too average and healthy. What a pity, being just 12 years old at the time.
Certainly, “Leon: The Professional” played a significant role in kick-starting Natalie Portman’s acting career and elevating Luc Besson as a screenwriter and director after “La Femme Nikita” (1990). This film tells the story of Mathilda, a young girl who seeks refuge with Leon, a skilled assassin, following the brutal killing of her family. Over time, they develop a strong relationship, and Mathilda learns the art of hitman work from Leon.
Later, Ricci appeared in various roles, most notably in the successful family film, “Casper” (1995). Additionally, she shared screen time with other stars in films such as “The Ice Storm” (1997), “Buffalo 66” (1998), and “Sleepy Hollow” (1999). Over the past three decades, she has also been a part of numerous other movies and television productions.
Christina Ricci Has Been in Several Recent and High-Profile Shows and Movies
Over the past ten years, Ricci has appeared in many notable TV shows and films such as “Z: The Beginning of Everything” from 2015, “The Matrix Resurrections” released in 2021, a podcast series called “Harley Quinn & The Joker: Sound Mind” where she voiced Harley in 2023, and “Batman: Caped Crusader” in 2024 as Catwoman. Additionally, Ricci has been involved in numerous other projects.
Her last two series, “Yellowjackets” and “Wednesday” on Netflix (a modern adaptation of “The Addams Family”), have been some of her most successful works in her career. In “Wednesday”, she portrayed Marilyn Thornhill, the dorm mother and botanical sciences teacher to Wednesday and Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) at Nevermore Academy. As the first season unfolds, we discover that Marilyn is actually Laurel Gates, who eventually becomes one of the main antagonists in the series. Unfortunately, she will not be reprising her role for Season 2.
In March of this year, Season 3 of Yellowjackets made its debut, featuring Melanie Lynskey as Misty, a character who endured a plane crash in 1996 alongside her high school soccer teammates while stranded in the Canadian wilderness for nearly two years. The narrative alternates between the past and present, showcasing how both the teenagers navigate their circumstances and the adults grapple with the lasting impact of their ordeal.
The show, “Yellowjackets,” is influenced by the novel “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding and the real-life incident involving the Uruguayan rugby team whose plane crashed in the Andes. It delves into grim subjects like morality, survival, psychological trauma, and even cannibalism. Since its premiere in 2021, it has garnered numerous award nominations, including a Primetime Emmy nod for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for Ricci. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently boasts a 93% critical approval rating and a 60% audience score.
