It was announced that Assassin’s Creed Shadows can be played on the Steam Deck right away, contrary to initial worries about the device’s compatibility.
At first, the company stated that the game wouldn’t function on the handheld device at its release due to its hardware demands. Later on, Ubisoft succumbed to fan petitions and declared on March 12, 2025, that the game would be compatible with Steam Deck from day one.
For the first time since Ubisoft changed its release policy last year, a new Assassin’s Creed game (Shadows) will debut on Steam simultaneously with its launch. This means that fans who were worried about playing the upcoming Japan-set Assassin’s Creed on Valve’s handheld device no longer have to go through additional workarounds to do so.
At first, Ubisoft didn’t include the Steam Deck as a supported platform for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, because the hardware doesn’t meet the minimum PC specifications. Developers have suggested that it’s unlikely the game will be optimized for this device due to these technical reasons. This news left many players disappointed, particularly those who were eager to play the game on-the-go, as several other AAA titles have already been made compatible with the Steam Deck.
Initially, Ubisoft seemed uncertain about supporting Tom Clancy’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider on the Steam Deck. But the overwhelming enthusiasm from fans convinced them to reconsider. Later, the developers shared the news via social media that the game would indeed be compatible with the Steam Deck at launch. The statement also explained that they were awaiting Valve’s final classification to determine if the game would receive the “Steam Deck Verified” label or simply be listed as “Playable.
While Ubisoft has confirmed that the Steam Deck can run Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it doesn’t guarantee a flawless experience. Valve categorizes games for the Deck into three tiers: Verified (optimized for best performance), Playable (functions but may need minor tweaks), and Unsupported. As of now, previous Assassin’s Creed games available on Steam are listed as Playable, implying they work but might require some adjustments to run smoothly.
If Shadows manages to secure the first spot as a fully Verified game within the series, it would significantly boost its compatibility with handheld devices. Fingers crossed that Shadows avoids facing similar troubles, but it’s crucial for players to stay aware of potential issues. It’s worth noting that even some games marked “Steam Deck Verified” have experienced stuttering and frame rate problems upon release, so players should maintain realistic expectations.
As a Steam Deck owner, I can’t help but feel thrilled knowing that even with a few uncertainties regarding performance and optimization, having the game available on the first day is a significant victory for us. It’s moments like these that make the gaming experience all the more rewarding!
People who have already pre-ordered Shadows can start downloading the game before its official March 20 launch, and test its performance on Valve’s hardware right away once it becomes active.
