Monster Hunter Wilds: Why the Lack of Elder Dragons Is Actually a Good Thing

As a seasoned gamer diving deep into the world of Monster Hunter Wilds, I’ve noticed that the community is starting to ask about the whereabouts of the Elder Dragons. These legendary creatures are missing in action, but let me assure you, their absence doesn’t diminish the game’s impressive roster of monsters one bit. The beasts we’re battling are still a formidable challenge, leaving no room for disappointment!

It’s fortunate that we haven’t encountered any Elder Dragons at this point, since their presence would certainly upset the equilibrium maintained by the four dominant dragons in each region: Rey Dau, Uth Duna, Nu Udra, and Jin Dahaad.

Although I did miss them in Wilds, they are not as crucial to the game’s storyline.

The Lore Implications

Hint: The reason we don’t encounter Elder Dragons in the game is due to the ancient Wyverian civilization. They developed a powerful weapon that surpassed all Elder Dragons, which led to their demise. Players who have completed the Low Rank of the game learn about this through the existence of Zoh Shia, a being created from random Elder Dragon DNA, capable of warding off catastrophic monsters similar to the Elder Dragons.

It seems that the Elders appear to be wary of Zoh Shia. But since we’ve previously defeated Zoh Shia during our Low Rank encounters, it’s plausible that we might encounter other Elder Dragons in the future. However, it’s not necessary for Capcom to introduce them straight away.

Why It’s a Good Thing

It’s worth noting that if Elder Dragons such as Teostra, Kushala Daora, and even Chameleos were to be introduced, it could potentially upset the game’s ecosystem. These monsters possess powers capable of altering weather conditions, a factor that significantly impacts Monster Hunter Wilds via Inclemencies.

Introducing Kushala Daora might disrupt the balanced flow of the game’s weather pattern, given its ability to manipulate storms. Visualize a scenario where it teams up with Rey Dau – such a combination could potentially lead to a horrifying in-game experience.

Potential Elder Dragons?

Without a doubt, given Capcom’s extensive collection of Elder Dragons, it’s likely that we’ll see more of them in upcoming updates. Mizutsune, the leviathan, starting off with Title Update 1 suggests that we won’t be welcoming new Elders at the beginning of next month.

The data leak hints at the comeback of formidable adversaries, as data diggers have discovered details about a beast that derives its power from oil. Seasoned Monster Hunter enthusiasts will recall this as no one other than Gogmazios, an oil-soaked dragon known for causing catastrophic devastation. Given the Oilwell Basin as a primary location teeming with oil, it’s clear that Gogmazios would disrupt the balance of the Wilds’ ecosystem.

In the event that additional Elder Dragons like Lunastra and Teostra make an appearance, many players (including myself) might feel a sense of déjà vu from battling them in Rise and World, and we could use a fresh experience. As for Kushala Daora, let’s try to avoid him this time around.

Title Updates

Instead of idling while anticipating the Elder Dragons, it would be more productive to repeatedly take down Tempered Apexes and Arkveld. This repetition allows us plenty of opportunity to grasp the fresh mechanics in Monster Hunter Wilds and construct robust armor sets and weapons.

Title Update 1, due in early April, won’t immediately bring Elder Dragons into play. Instead, Capcom plans to focus on introducing a Gathering Hub and more formidable versions of existing monsters. If Arch-Tempered Monsters are part of this update, players eager for a tougher fight might find themselves satisfied, as they may have been wishing for such a challenge.

It’s beneficial for Monster Hunter Wilds that the Elder Dragons aren’t present, as they were a recurring feature in past games and have become too familiar. If Capcom decides to include a new Elder Dragon, it should be something unique, like Safi’Jiva or Kulve Taroth.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the Low-Rank Zorah Magdaros is still just a tutorial boss in the game. It’s possible that Capcom might be preparing a more powerful variant of the Equal Dragon weapon, as hinted by its name.
