John Wick. Rambo. John McClane. Ellen Ripley. Action heroes whose names are etched into cinematic stone thanks to their intrepid nature and affinity for going it alone against all odds. But one character is missing. A character who embodies that same inner strength, resilience, and determination in the face of adversity. That name is Aatami Korpi, and while you may not know it yet, you won’t forget it after seeing his debut action thriller, Sisu, which is all set to hit free streaming this month.
Written and directed by Jalmari Helander, the Finnish action thriller Sisu was released back in 2022 and stars Jorma Tommila as Aatami Korpi alongside Aksel Hennie, Jack Doolan, Mimosa Willamo, and Onni Tommila. The brutal and bloody action outing follows a mysterious lone prospector who, after being robbed by a group of Nazi soldiers during the last days of World War II, must wage a one-man war of his own.
Sisu was recently made available to stream on
in the United Kingdom and will land on free streaming service The Roku Channel in the United States on March 29, 2025. While you wait, you can check out the official synopsis for Sisu below.
“During the last desperate days of WWII, a solitary prospector (Jorma Tommila) crosses paths with Nazis on a scorched-earth retreat in northern Finland. When the Nazis steal his gold, they quickly discover that they have just tangled with no ordinary miner. While there is no direct translation for the Finnish word “sisu”, this legendary ex-commando will embody what sisu means: a white-knuckled form of courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds. And no matter what the Nazis throw at him, the one-man death squad will go to outrageous lengths to get his gold back — even if it means killing every last Nazi in his path.”
‘Sisu’ Boasts a Score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes
Sisu was met with rave reviews upon release and currently stands strong at 94% from critics and 88% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Praised by the former for being “deliriously gory” and for its success in providing “bloody satisfaction to action aficionados,” and by the latter for being a “gory grindhouse good time” as well as revealing “what it might look like if John Wick went up against Nazis,” Sisu is destined to become a cult action classic.
A Sisu sequel is not only reported to be in the works, but may have already finished filming, according to a recent report by World of Reel. The report claims that Sisu 2 is now in the can, with the studio eyeing a 2025 release date. Jalmari Helander is back in the director’s chair, with Jorma Tommila reprising the lead role as the unstoppable Aatami. While plot details remain under wraps, Helander has previously teased what he has in mind for Aatami’s return…
“I have an idea of what would happen next. That was one of the biggest challenges when writing it as I didn’t know how the gold will make him happy in the end. So, I decided to end the movie like I did but it would be interesting to see what happens to him when he has all the money in the world as I’m pretty sure it won’t make him happy. Maybe somebody needs his skills again but let’s see.”
