Brad Pitt is set to return to the big screen with the upcoming sports action film F1. Pitt has been relatively active in the last few years, mostly overseeing film projects as a producer, but F1 marks his highly-hyped return in what could be one of the biggest films of the year. Pitt is going all-in on the project (he’s also involved as a producer), but it wasn’t an easy movie to make. According to director Joseph Kosinski, they only depended on one single thing to make the movie work: Brad Pitt had to learn to drive a Formula One car, a vehicle that can reach a speed of 230 mph.
F1 is directed by Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, the writer/director team behind Top Gun: Maverick, making F1 feel like Top Gun On Wheels. Joining Pitt in the film are actors Javier Bardem, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Shea Whigham, and Tobias Menzies, among others. The film will also feature real-life Formula One drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. It is set to premiere worldwide on June 25, with American audiences having to wait a couple more days to see it on June 27, 2025.
As reported by CinemaBlend, Kosinski talked at length about Pitt’s driving during a virtual conference when presenting the recent trailer for the film. The director offered a few details about the movie, but also made it clear that months of intense training were necessary in order to get the actors inside the fast cars. The driving had to look real, and this couldn’t only be accomplished with VFX. They had to drive real cars
Per Kosinski:
“We actually bought six F2 cars, real F2 race cars, and worked with Mercedes AMG, the Formula One team, and their engineers to build real race cars that could carry our camera equipment, recorders, and transmitters for making this film. So every time you see Brad or Damson driving in this movie, they’re driving on their own in one of these real race cars on a real F1 track. So that’s kind of how we approached the making of this film.”
F1 is produced by Pitt, Jerry Bruckheimer and racer Lewis Hamilton. The real F1 driver’s participation wasn’t limited to supervising as a producer, either, as he was actually involved in the training of the actors, too. Kosinski made it very clear during the conference that Pitt’s ability to drive Formula One cars was elemental to making the film work:
“It required months, literally months of training. But the first day was really fun. It was me, Brad and Lewis Hamilton at the track together, all of us jumping in cars and driving each other around in sports cars, which was one of those things: I’ll never forget having Lewis Hamilton as your driving instructor. But what we learned and what Lewis was really interested in was seeing if Brad did know how to drive, right? Because if Brad can’t drive, this whole film wasn’t going to work.”
Keeping It Real in ‘F1’
The visuals alone might have given an impression of authenticity. Unlike Tom Cruise, who frequently defies gravity with death-defying stunts, Brad Pitt’s roles often involve safety precautions due to the inherent risks in such productions.
Nevertheless, Kosinski confirmed that Pitt was a natural when it came to driving Formula One cars:
“What Lewis was very happy to discover was that Brad had a lot of just natural ability right from the start, and I don’t know where he got that or if he was born with it, and he rides motorcycles, which I think has something to do with it, but he’s just a very talented, naturally gifted driver, which for Lewis after that first meeting gave him a lot of confidence that we might have a shot at pulling this off.
“He’s just had that natural feel for grip in the car, and what we’re doing on this film is dangerous. So yeah, you have to be fearless, and when you see Brad driving, that’s not acting. He’s really concentrating on keeping that car on the track and out of the wall during all those scenes. So that’s something that you just can’t fake, I think. I hope the audience feels that when they watch the movie.”
