It appears that Warner Bros.’ gamble on the quirky science fiction movie “Mickey 17” directed by Bong Joon-Ho might not have paid off as expected, given its relatively poor performance at the box office.
Despite Robert Pattinson’s star power, the box office earnings for the dystopian film “Mickey 17” fell significantly short of expectations. The movie, where Pattinson plays a character as a series of clones performing low-level jobs, is projected to lose around $75-$80 million during its cinema run. Insider reports suggest that the financial aspect of movies on this scale, as shared by Variety, reveals that “Mickey 17” earned $35.7 million domestically and $92.2 million worldwide just two weeks after release. Originally, the film was anticipated to gross around $175-$180 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run. However, the actual estimates are far below the initial projections, recently revised to a total of $143 million worldwide, with only $46 million coming from domestic sales and the remaining $97 million from global markets.
The financial break-even point for “Mickey 17” is roughly around $300 million USD. Although a movie’s earnings don’t solely stem from theater sales, it’s probable that this film will aim to generate revenue through television and streaming rights. Initially costing $118 million USD (including tax incentives), Warner Bros. invested an extra $80 million USD on promotional efforts, including a $4 million USD spend during the AFC championship. Despite a slow start at the box office, “Mickey 17” garnered generally favorable reviews.
