Disney CEO Hints at Exciting Figment Series or Short Videos!

For those who are fans of Figment, it’s no secret that the story begins with One Little Spark. Recently, Disney CEO Bob Iger has sparked excitement among fans with his comments regarding EPCOT’s cherished character. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Figment’s future was brought up during Disney’s annual shareholder meeting, with Iger being questioned about the subject during a session on Thursday. One shareholder inquired if there were plans to utilize the zany mascot in different media formats beyond the theme park. In response, Iger hinted that Figment could potentially show up in a future TV series or short-form content.

This marks my 24th year overall, and the 18th as CEO. The question regarding Figment has been posed approximately 15 times, indicating his popularity among shareholders. It’s clear they are interested in him because they ask about him frequently. Beyond our corporate sphere, Figment is also well-liked at EPCOT, where visitors can meet him and embark on an imaginative adventure. This popularity has prompted me to suggest that our creative teams explore the possibility of creating a series or short-form videos featuring Figment. Given the number of times this suggestion has been made, it seems Figment’s appeal extends beyond his role as a walk-around character in our parks and resorts.

Figment, a whimsical purple dragon, is not as well-known compared to other heroes and villains in Disney’s collection, yet he has managed to garner a considerable fanbase since his introduction in the Journey Into Imagination ride at the Imagination Pavilion within Walt Disney World’s EPCOT theme park. This attraction first opened on March 3, 1983, offering guests an encounter with the cheerful professor Dreamfinder and his small companion Figment. Over the years, the attraction has experienced some modifications, with Figment’s role evolving, but he has consistently remained a significant character in Disney’s universe.

A Figment Movie Was Once in the Works

Though Figment has garnered quite a following, it seems that he hasn’t had his own movie or TV series yet. In the past, he made appearances in some educational short films in the late ’80s and even had a run in a Marvel comic series from 2014 to 2015. However, fans have been yearning for more content with this character lately, with only occasional references in Disney productions such as his portrait in Riley’s Imagination Land in Inside Out (2015) and his appearance on a light-up sign during the carnival scene at the end of Toy Story 4 (2019).

Contrary to earlier reports from 2022, it appears that a Figment-centric feature film may not materialize after all. The writers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, who worked on Detective Pikachu, were initially attached, with Seth Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures producing. However, since the initial announcement, there has been no further news about this project. During a recent shareholder meeting, Bob Iger did not mention any Figment-centric projects, suggesting that this movie might remain an unrealized dream rather than becoming a reality on either the big screen or Disney+.
