The creator of Yellowstone has been enjoying a string of successes lately, with his neo-Western drama becoming a massive hit and allowing him to establish a unique genre. However, it’s worth noting that not all of his creations have been as successful, as the action crime thriller he made, which is soon to be released on another platform, demonstrates.
Originally launched in 2018, marks Stefano Sollima as the new director, taking over from Denis Villeneuve who directed the initial film. It continues the storyline post the 2015’s critically acclaimed and Academy Award-nominated movie titled Sicario. The cast includes Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Jeffrey Donovan, and Raoul Trujillo who all reprise their roles from the previous release. New additions to the cast are Isabela Moner, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener. Starting April 1, you can stream Sicario: Day of the Soldado on Netflix. For more information, here’s the official synopsis provided below.
FBI agent Matt Graver enlists the help of the enigmatic operative Alejandro Gillick when drug cartels begin transporting terrorists into the United States. The conflict intensifies as Alejandro abducts a prominent kingpin’s daughter to heighten the tension. As the girl becomes unintentionally caught in the crossfire, Graver and Gillick must make crucial decisions regarding her future while questioning the very reasons they are engaged in this struggle.
Unlike Its Predecessor, ‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’ Was Met With a Much More Divisive Reaction
Unlike the original “Sicario”, which was widely acclaimed with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 92% from critics and 85% from audiences, the reception to “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” was more divided. The sequel has ratings of 62% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 68% from audiences on Popcornmeter, indicating a somewhat lesser but still engaging action-thriller. Critics’ consensus states that while “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” may lack the subversiveness of its predecessor, it delivers as a stylish and dynamic thriller, albeit with a darker tone due to its amoral masculinity.
It’s been reported that a third installment in the “Sicario” film series is underway, tentatively named “Sicario: Capos”. Details about the plot for this upcoming movie are scarce at the moment, but representatives from Thunder Road Films, one of the production companies involved with the Sicario films, have shared some insights into the progress of “Sicario 3”.
We’re working on deciding what plot would justify a third film. Truthfully, we’d be thrilled to create another movie, and I believe the cast would be eager to return. However, it seems we need to determine where this story goes next within their adventure.
We’ve been chatting about it frequently, contemplating it, and debating it. I adore those films; they truly resonate with me on an emotional level. I believe it’s an exceptional series. You know, Denis [Villeneuve] raised the bar significantly, and since then, they, along with our cast members, have achieved remarkable feats. Taylor [Sheridan] has created this intricate universe, which I think necessitates bringing everyone back together. Ideally, we’d like to reunite all three actors. In an ideal world, that would be the goal.
