Do you recall the incident at the 2022 Oscars when Will Smith infamously slapped Chris Rock? It’s hard to forget, as it left a lasting impact on live television. Now, Will Smith has released his first full-length rap album in two decades, and he doesn’t shy away from addressing the elephant in the room concerning his career, repeatedly bringing up the topic throughout the album.
On Friday, Will Smith’s fifth studio album, titled “Based On A True Story“, was released. After giving it a spin, it’s clear that Smith didn’t hold back when it came to referencing the Oscars incident in his recent lyrics. The opening track, “Int. Barbershop Day,” even features the phrase “Will Smith is cancelled” as various voices debate him following the slap incident. You can listen to the song on YouTube by clicking below:
It seems that Will Smith might have experienced a period of emotional turmoil following the slap incident, which he refers to as “kooking out.” However, recently, he found himself creating music again and working on this new album. This could be the reason why he begins his song “Based On A True Story” in such a manner. The lyrics of the song contain strong statements like “I heard he won the Oscar but he had to give it back/And you know they only made him do that shit because he’s Black” and “Him and Jada both crazy girl, what you talkin’ bout?/ You better keep his wife’s name out of your mouth.” These lines suggest that Smith is addressing issues related to racism and the scrutiny he and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, have faced in their personal lives.
I’ve had some setbacks, but I’m back in the lead, You all are going to have to get used to it again, I’m not stopping, my work is still powerful, Even though I won’t be nominated.
In the same tune, he also touches upon his marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith through these lyrics: “My private life with my spouse, keep your nose out, it’s complex.” Although it doesn’t provide explicit details about a specific event, Will Smith’s latest album sheds light on his personal challenges and offers uplifting messages wrapped in catchy tunes such as “I’m invincible” and “It appears effortless.
Following the viral Oscar incident involving Will Smith, he has recently premiered two films: “Emancipation” on Apple TV+ and last summer’s blockbuster “Bad Boys: Ride Or Die”. Coming up, there are several new Will Smith movies in the pipeline, including a sequel to “I Am Legend” and a movie with Kevin Hart reminiscent of “Planes, Trains and Automobiles”. You can currently stream “Based On A True Story” on Spotify or any platform where you enjoy music.
