In 2024, achieved a massive success with “The Beekeeper,” and teaming up again with director David Ayer for another movie, , seemed likely to replicate that triumph, given the involvement of action legend Sylvester Stallone. However, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics but an impressive 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it appears that the film’s box office performance has unexpectedly stalled and is taking a break instead.
In the movie titled “A Working Man“, Jason Statham portrays Levon Cade, a man who used to be in black ops but now leads a quiet life as a construction worker. But when his boss’s daughter gets kidnapped by human traffickers, it doesn’t take much time before the familiar Statham persona reemerges… which essentially means there will be some rough encounters ahead for others.
The movie started with a 64% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but this has since decreased to 55%. Despite this, the initial response following its Thursday preview screenings was overwhelmingly favorable at 91%, only slightly below The Beekeeper‘s 92%. Although it’s still early in the game and one day doesn’t determine overall earnings, the box office revenue from Thursday previews for A Working Man fell significantly short of last year’s popular action film.
Based on Collider’s report, “A Working Man” earned about $1.1 million domestically during previews on Thursday, which is significantly lower than the $2.4 million garnered by “The Beekeeper.” It remains to be seen if this film can boost its earnings over the weekend with its positive reviews as a catalyst. However, regardless of how its theatrical run concludes, a big streaming release is planned for the future.
Jason Statham Will Be Back for ‘The Beekeeper 2’
It’s common knowledge that when a Jason Statham film premieres, another one is often lined up to continue the Statham excitement. The actor will find himself in a sticky situation again as he rejoins the “The Beekeeper” series for a sequel. Unlike the original director David Ayer, this time Timo Tjahjanto will be at the helm. However, fans can anticipate more of the high-octane action that made the initial film so popular.
On his verified X/Twitter platform, the movie director posted a picture from an impressive fight sequence found in the film “The Beekeeper“. This scene pits Statham’s assassin against Lazarus, portrayed by Taylor James. Lazarus is a South African mercenary with a background in eliminating beekeepers and commanding his crew of assassins and gun-for-hire. Intriguingly, Tjahjanto hinted that these characters may clash again in the potential sequel.
According to the director, Lazarus was an exceptionally intriguing villain, although he’s not entirely evil but rather a skilled, disabled mercenary with distinctive features. The name Lazarus and the movie titled The Beekeeper, one of Statham’s more unconventional films, suggests that a resurrection might be possible in the storyline.
