Ryan Coogler Feverishly Writing Denzel Washington Action Role for ‘Black Panther 3’

As a fervent admirer of the Black Panther franchise, I can’t help but share my excitement about the recent whispers regarding Denzel Washington potentially joining the cast for Black Panther 3. While gracing our screens during the promotional tour for Gladiator II, Denzel himself hinted at Ryan Coogler penning a role tailored just for him in the third installment. Needless to say, the thought of such a renowned actor enriching the Marvel Cinematic Universe is thrilling, even though, at this juncture, Black Panther 3 doesn’t officially appear on Marvel’s release calendar. With all the attention currently fixed on Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, we can only hope that the rumors prove true and we won’t have to wait long for this potential collaboration to come to fruition.

In an episode of the Nightcap show, director Ryan Coogler hinted that Black Panther 3 isn’t too far off by saying “it won’t be long.” The discussion turned to Denzel Washington possibly being part of the third Black Panther film, and while Coogler didn’t confirm his participation, he expressed his desire to collaborate with him and is working towards making that happen.

According to Coogler, the decision hinges on whether Denzel Washington remains enthusiastic about participating in the venture.

Absolutely! I’ve been eager to collaborate with Denzel Washington, and I’m making every effort to make that a reality. I plan to work alongside him in that upcoming film. If he’s on board, it’s definitely going to happen. You know, he’s a living legend, a mentor for many of us, always looking out for us.

When Will ‘Black Panther 3’ Hit Theaters?

Ryan Coogler’s confirmation that we won’t have to wait much longer for Black Panther 3 supports the recent speculation about its February 18, 2028 release date, a slot currently reserved by Marvel Studios. This suggests that Black Panther 3 might premiere just two days after the ten-year anniversary of the original Black Panther, which debuted on February 16, 2018. Coogler is expected to ramp up development for Black Panther 3 following the promotional tour for his upcoming vampire film, Sinners, slated for release on April 18, 2025.

It’s uncertain at this point who Denzel Washington would portray in Black Panther 3, but there are speculations that he could be the primary antagonist. Given the production timeline for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, it seems likely that Black Panther 3 won’t begin filming until September 2026, which is after Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters and while Avengers: Secret Wars is still in production. Therefore, while director Ryan Coogler might suggest that the wait for Black Panther 3 won’t be prolonged, it appears that we’ll have to wait a while longer before any details about the film or Denzel Washington’s potential role are disclosed.

While it’s not guaranteed that there won’t be any more “Black Panther” for fans in the immediate future, there are exciting developments on the horizon! The animated miniseries titled “Eyes of Wakanda” will delve into Wakanda’s MCU history and premiere on Disney+ on Aug. 6, 2025. Fans can also look forward to seeing Letitia Wright as Shuri, Winston Duke as M’Baku, and Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday“, set for release in theaters on May 1, 2026. If “Avengers: Secret Wars” indeed marks a new era for the MCU, it seems fitting that “Black Panther 3” — the third and potentially final installment of the trilogy — might prepare audiences for an upcoming era filled with heroes like the X-Men, The Fantastic Four, and many more.
