Some exciting offerings await on Netflix this April, including the anticipated comeback of a beloved dating show, the launch of an animated version based on a popular Japanese video game, Charlie Brooker’s newest tech-themed horror series, a potential blockbuster action flick from Japan, the final chapter for Joe Goldberg, and Tom Hardy battling crime while mastering accents – these are just a few of the new movies and shows joining Netflix’s lineup.
Netflix’s popular and award-winning reality dating series, Love on the Spectrum, returns for its third season on April 2nd. This show, initially launched from Australia in 2019, has produced multiple international versions, and now we have a fresh installment of the American adaptation. In this new season, more singles with autism embark on their journeys to find love.
On April 3rd, the long-awaited and highly anticipated animated adaptation of the famous Japanese video game “Devil May Cry” will be released on Netflix. This project has been in development since its announcement by Netflix and game maker Capcom back in 2018. Fans can finally watch the completed product this month. The animation is being produced by South Korean studio Studio Mir, in collaboration with Adi Shankar, who is also behind Netflix’s animated series “Castlevania”. The story of “Devil May Cry” follows demon hunter Dante as he tries to prevent a demonic invasion of Earth.
For April, Netflix’s major focus seems to be the seventh season of their sci-fi tech horror anthology series, Black Mirror, created by Charlie Brooker. This show is known for making you question your reliance on technology and prompting a desire to disconnect and enjoy nature. The episodes are mostly under an hour, with one exception, a sequel to “USS Callister,” which runs close to 90 minutes. Notable stars appearing in season seven include Awkwafina, Issa Rae, Paul Giamatti, Billy Magnussen, Tracee Ellis Ross, Milanka Brooks, Peter Capaldi, Emma Corrin, Patsy Ferran, and Lewis Gribben.
A potential word-of-mouth sensation for Netflix might be the upcoming original feature “Bullet Train: Explosion,” debuting on April 23rd. This movie is a modern reimagining of the 1975 film “The Bullet Train,” which served as the foundation for the blockbuster hit “Speed.” Directed by Shinji Higuchi, known for his ability to blend striking visuals with intense human drama in films like “Shin Godzilla,” this edge-of-your-seat suspense thriller follows the harrowing struggles of individuals fighting to save lives under extreme circumstances. The script was written by Kazuhiro Nakagawa and Norichika Oba, with Kota Ishizuka producing for Episcope Productions. Tsuyoshi Kusanagi headlines the cast, promising a high-stakes, visually stunning cinematic experience.
The end approaches for Netflix’s series “You,” as the fifth and last season premieres on April 24th. Having spent some time in misty London, the captivating serial killer Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley) is back in New York, but this time he’s married to Kate (portrayed by Charlotte Ritchie). This union brings a wave of family turmoil. Joe must now confront his bloody past and struggle to survive as his crimes ultimately catch up with him. The fifth season of “You” will also feature Madeline Brewer, Anna Camp, Amy-Leigh Hickman, and Griffin Matthews.
On April 25th, Netflix has a chance to break its losing streak in terms of original films (particularly among critics) when the gritty crime drama “Havoc” premieres on their platform. This film is directed by Gareth Evans, known for his exceptional work on the two The Raid movies and the critically acclaimed series “Gangs of London“. The story revolves around a tough detective who delves into the criminal underworld to rescue a politician’s son following a failed drug deal. While all that seems promising, the main reason to watch this is the stellar performance by Tom Hardy, who appears to have given an exceptional performance with a unique accent tailored for his fans. The film also stars Forest Whitaker, Timothy Olyphant, and Jessie Buckley.
Netflix added a variety of films in April such as “The Addams Family”, “The Age of Innocence”, “Big Daddy”, “Bonnie & Clyde”, “The Breakfast Club”, “Conan the Destroyer”, “Couples Retreat”, “The Croods”, “Draft Day”, “Field of Dreams”, “For Love of the Game”, “Geostorm”, “Heat”, “Insidious: Chapter 2”, “K-9”, “Lucy”, “Matilda”, “The Mauritanian”, “The Place Beyond the Pines”, “Psycho”, “Sicario: Day of the Soldado”, “Smokey and the Bandit”, “Smokey and the Bandit II”, and “Uncle Buck”.
