Maddening Truth About Venom and Spider-Man Crossover

The power of the superhero genre remains unwavering, as multiple interconnected universes keep emerging. Alongside the Marvel Cinematic Universe (available on Disney+), there’s Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Regrettably, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker hasn’t been a part of it yet. For quite some time, fans have yearned to see Spider-Man and Venom share the screen, and more recently, Tom Hardy’s comments about that crossover have left many frustrated.

Movie enthusiasts who followed the Marvel films chronologically might remember the hints of a Venom and Spider-Man collaboration, which seemed imminent due to the post-credits scene in “Venom 2”. However, this team-up never materialized, and “Venom 3” instead started by addressing and adjusting that plotline. During an interview on The Playlist’s podcast, Tom Hardy discussed the fate of the Spidey/Venom concept, sharing insights into how it eventually unfolded.

We came very close to collaborating. The closest we could have been, other than making a movie together, which would have been fantastic due to the sheer enjoyment it would bring, was… In essence, for me, this opportunity held significant value because of the children. You see, although adults appreciate superhero movies as indicated by their box office success, I am regularly reminded by kids about the importance of these characters. And they are unaware as to why their beloved characters haven’t shared screen time yet.

It seems like it would have been perfect… if they’d created that long-awaited crossover! As a comics enthusiast, I had hoped to see these characters combined, but the peculiar way the 47-year-old actor spoke about this pairing is really getting under my skin.

After watching “Venom: The Last Dance”, I was disappointed that they disregarded the multiverse plotline established in the previous film, especially since they had previously hinted at a crossover with Spider-Man. It seems simpler for Tom Hardy’s trilogy to avoid any references to Peter Parker, similar to how other films like “Morbius” and “Madame Web” didn’t delve into that character. This way, we wouldn’t have to wait and speculate about when Venom and Spider-Man would ultimately meet.

On Disney+, you can exclusively stream the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man adventures. The new ad-supported plan is available for just $9.99 per month. For an ad-free experience, it’s $15.99 a month or pre-pay $159.99 annually to save 16%. Check out the deal now!

Instead of saying “While Hardy claims ‘we got close’,” I would rephrase it as “However, when Hardy suggests they came ‘close’, I interpret this as highlighting the studio’s shortcomings. Fans had clear expectations, but it seems the studios struggled to meet them.

One point in Hardy’s remarks that left me perplexed was his chats about young admirers. Even though it’s undeniable that children would be thrilled to witness Venom and Spider-Man again on the big screen, his trilogy of movies might not be suitable for kids due to their content. While they are all rated PG-13, the main symbiote character is shown consuming people’s heads. Consequently, I would hazard a guess that Venom fans tend to be slightly older compared to other superhero series.

It appears that Hardy’s time as Venom might be over, suggesting he won’t likely appear in Marvel films scheduled for release up to 2025 and possibly even beyond.
