An adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk will finally be strolling into theaters this fall.

At the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Lionsgate officially announced that the movie directed by Francis Lawrence will hit theaters nationwide on September 12. This suspenseful film features Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Jordan Gonzalez and Josh Hamilton, with supporting roles played by Judy Greer and Mark Hamill.

Even though “The Long Walk” wasn’t Stephen King’s first published book, it is remarkable because it’s said to be the initial one he penned while studying at the University of Maine. Under his pseudonym Richard Bachman, this dystopian thriller unfolds around a brutal and deadly annual walking competition where 100 boys must maintain a specific pace without stopping. A warning is issued if they slow down, but a second offense leads to disqualification – and ultimately, death.

Lawrence boasts a lengthy and prosperous relationship with Lionsgate following his direction of the ‘Hunger Games’ series films, specifically ‘Catching Fire’, ‘Mockingjay – Part 1’, ‘Part 2’, and most recently, ‘The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’. Together with Media Capital Technologies, Vertigo Entertainment, and Lawrence’s production company, Lionsgate is embarking on a new project titled ‘The Long Walk‘. This upcoming production has Lawrence, Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, and Cameron MacConomy serving as producers.

The movie adaptation of “The Long Walk” has taken a long journey to reach the screen. Earlier, it was in development at New Line under a different creative team. Lawrence has been interested in the book since his time working on 2007’s “I Am Legend“, when he came across it.

Earlier this year, he shared with Collider that he had wanted to bring the project to life, but Frank Darabont had already secured the rights. Over the years, many have attempted to adapt it, yet none succeeded. However, we seemed to have found a winning formula, collaborating with JT Mollner from Strange Darling. He penned an excellent script, and our partnership resulted in a swift and successful outcome.

Every year, cinema owners and Hollywood studios convene at CinemaCon, an event that has been previously known as the National Association of Theatre Owners (now called Cinema United). This year’s gathering takes place in Las Vegas from March 31st to April 3rd.
