During Lionsgate’s presentation at CinemaCon on Tuesday, Guadagnino showed up in a video segment to reveal plans for his fresh take on the 1991 book “American Psycho” written by Bret Easton Ellis.

The director of “American Psycho” expressed affection for the book, stating it’s had a significant impact on him. Once it was verified that Scott Z. Burns penned the film’s script, Guadagnino announced he’s engaging in discussions with notable actors for the main roles.

Previously, the novel “American Psycho” was turned into a movie by director Mary Herron. In this film, Christian Bale played the main character Bateman. This movie was shown in cinemas by Lionsgate in 2000. The news about an update to this adaptation first surfaced in October.

This upcoming project originates from Frenesy Films and it’s not a retelling of the initial film adaptation, but rather a fresh interpretation based on the original novel. Sam Pressman from Pressman Films, whose father Edward R. Pressman was involved in the 2000 movie production, is overseeing this new rendition as an executive producer.

Guadagnino’s latest works encompass films such as “Queer” and “Challengers”, while “After the Hunt” is set to premiere in cinemas this year, starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield.

Recently, Burns was responsible for producing the Apple TV+ series “Extrapolations” from last year. This series features a talented ensemble cast consisting of Meryl Streep, Sienna Miller, Kit Harington, Edward Norton, Diane Lane, and Daveed Diggs. Burns also directed the 2019 Amazon film “The Report,” and has writing credits for films like “The Bourne Ultimatum.

Each year, CinemaUnited (previously known as the National Association of Theater Owners) hosts CinemaCon, a gathering for exhibitors and film studios, which takes place from March 31 to April 3 this time around.
