Superman Just Showed An Extended Look At CinemaCon, And I Absolutely Love What The DC Blockbuster Is Doing With Krypto The Superdog

It makes sense that Superman would have a well-mannered dog as his pet, given that he represents goodness and righteousness. Typically, characters like Krypto in various adaptations embody this nobility. However, in the hands of writer/director James Gunn’s Superman, the superdog will not be a loyal and helpful sidekick, but rather an amusing and unruly force of chaos.

This afternoon, I attended a unique presentation by Warner Bros., held at CinemaCon – an annual event in Las Vegas for theater owners. The grand finale of their showcase was a special extended sneak peek of the upcoming Superman movie, scheduled to hit theaters this summer. While some of the footage shown mirrored what we’ve already seen in the first trailer released online a few months back, the additional content highlighted Krypto’s distinct character traits, and it had me laughing out loud.

Similar to the previously mentioned trailer, the Superman CinemaCon footage commenced with the title character landing harshly in a frozen wilderness, evidently wounded. Spitting blood onto the ice, he could only resort to calling for Krypto. Much like an obedient pet, the white dog approached swiftly, churning up large clouds of snow in his wake… however, he didn’t immediately offer assistance. Failing to recognize that his master was injured, he ran about, nipped at his foot, and even leaped onto the wounded Kryptonian’s body – causing him to flinch with pain.

In all his might, Superman requests, “Lead me back home,” but at first, Krypto doesn’t grasp the instruction. Gradually, Superman signals by swishing his cape across himself and offering a piece for Krypto to bite and pull. It takes a moment, but eventually, the dog understands. As they traverse the ground together, the Fortress of Solitude rises from beneath it. They approach a large metal door adorned with a glowing “S” insignia, and when it opens, Superman is welcomed by four robots upon entering.

The robots lift Superman to aid him, and he expresses his thanks – yet they disregard his gratitude since their lack of feelings prevents them from understanding it. The machines transport Superman to a medical station near a window, deciding that an intense burst of Earth’s yellow sun is essential for recovery. A series of magnifying glasses are strategically placed, emitting a beam directly onto Superman’s chest, and as the brightness intensifies, he shouts out in renewal.

After this scene from the trailer, more moments played out, culminating in a humorous finale. Once recovered, Superman is about to depart from the Fortress of Solitude, yet upon looking back, he notices Krypto has caused quite a ruckus. The robots couldn’t contain the chaos, they say, because Krypto is uncontrollable. Following Superman, Krypto begins to dash around and nip at his feet. In an irritated voice, Superman tells him to sit still. As Superman approaches the door, Krypto starts whimpering, making you feel a mix of frustration and affection despite the destruction and discomfort he causes.

The footage shown for the movie “Superman” at CinemaCon didn’t reveal any details about the film’s storyline, such as how the main character ended up badly injured and crashing in the snow. However, it effectively showcased the characters and was elevated by James Gunn’s unique talents (his knack for humor and passion for comics).

As we move into April, we’re only a bit over three months from the global theater release of Superman, and this recent sneak peek has me buzzing with anticipation! This much-awaited film is slated to hit screens everywhere on July 11. Keep checking back here at TopMob for updates on the upcoming DC movie as well as our exclusive coverage from CinemaCon 2025.
