Robert Altman, Dogme 95, Sam Peckinpah Films to Get Beijing Spotlight

At the 15th edition of the Beijing International Film Festival, the esteemed filmmakers Robert Altman, renowned for his works like “Gosford Park” and “M*A*S*H”, Sam Peckinpah, a master in portraying violence, and the avant-garde Danish group Dogme 95, founded by Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, will be given special focus.

In honor of the 130th anniversary of global cinema, the Beijing Festival has put together a special retrospective program. This program aims to chronicle the history of film and predict its future direction. By carefully choosing classic films, the festival combines reminiscence with fresh viewpoints, using past influences to spark creativity for what’s to come.

Included in the lineup is “Endless Waves: 30 Years of the Dogme 95.” This film movement, established three decades ago, emphasized the importance of story, performance, and theme over extravagant special effects or technical gimmicks. Its main objective was to foster directors as artists. Unfortunately, the festival has not yet disclosed which Dogme 95 films they will be showcasing.

In honor of the centennial birthday of renowned filmmaker Altman, a massive retrospective of his works is being held in China – the largest one ever. This event in Beijing will feature classic films such as M*A*S*H, The Long Goodbye, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Nashville, A Wedding, and California Split. Additionally, the documentary Altman by Ron Mann will be screened.

In honor of Sam Peckinpah, a trailblazer in the movie industry for his distinctive violent style, the 15th Beijing International Film Festival will showcase Peckinpah’s legendary western film The Wild Bunch. This presentation is part of their Tribute and Remembrance section. Notably, many filmmakers have been inspired by this movie.

This year, I’m proud to be representing Switzerland as the country of honor at the Beijing Festival! The 15th installment of this grand event unfolds in the heart of China’s capital, Beijing, from April 18th to the 26th.

Jiang Wen, a renowned Chinese actor-director known for movies like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Let the Bullets Fly”, will lead the main jury at an upcoming festival. This jury will present the Tiantan Award. Joining him on this esteemed panel are a variety of talented individuals. Among them are Chinese American director and actress Joan Chen, recognized for her work in “The Last Emperor”; British director David Yates, famous for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”; Chinese actor Ni Ni; Finnish director Teemu Nikki; Swiss director and actor Vincent Perez; and art director Tim Yip from Hong Kong.
