Talk To Me Director Explains Why Its Horror Sequel Is Taking So Long, And I’m So Bummed

Approximately two years have passed since Danny and Michael Philippou made their mark in the horror genre with the gripping A24 film “Talk to Me”. This movie offers an unyielding exploration of possession, leaving both viewers and critics profoundly affected upon its debut. Following its premiere, the studio swiftly announced a sequel to this horror sensation. However, if you were hoping for “Talk to Me 2” to appear on the 2025 movie schedule or soon thereafter, you may need to brace yourself for disappointment.

The Philippou brothers recently shared details about their busy creative schedule and an upcoming sequel they are working on. In an interview with IndieWire, Danny Philippou explained one main factor slowing down the production of the sequel.

A part of it is, I can’t decide which is the best avenue to take.

The pair are keeping busy with numerous projects, making things both challenging (yet exciting) for them. Their next project, the anticipated horror movie titled “Bring Her Back“, is currently in the post-production phase and appears to be shaping up as a darker, bloodier, and even more emotionally intense production compared to their initial success. Following this, Michael Philippou will venture to Mexico to shoot a documentary about death match wrestling, while Danny continues to develop a new horror idea that remains secret for now.

Regarding the release date of “Talk to Me 2”, Michael provided an informal, possibly disappointing timeframe for it.

In 2025, we can expect her return; in 2026, a documentary will be released; a new horror film is scheduled for 2027; and finally, there’s Talk to Me 2.

However, before everyone becomes overly optimistic, Danny injected a touch of realism (with a hint of sarcasm) into the conversation. He posted on his brother’s timeline:

Maybe, I don’t know… So, when we’re like 50, we’ll do Talk to Me 2.

It seems… it’ll probably be a while before we see that movie, given how I feel about it. But let’s not forget, they’re not lazing around; instead, they’re engaged in some innovative and captivating projects.

From a thorough viewing of their new movie TopMob, we can anticipate that the upcoming “Bring Her Back” will have a deeply personal touch. This is because it’s been shaped by real-life grief the filmmakers experienced during its creation. The death of their cousin’s child and later a close friend significantly impacted both the emotional resonance and complex layers of the film. They are delving into the horror genre to investigate what occurs when grief persists, a topic they felt they merely touched upon in “Talk to Me”.

The two movies have a common theme of spiritual possession, but “BHB” appears to focus more on tragedy rather than fear. It’s evident that the Philippous are committed to their craft and aren’t making sequels for the sake of it. However, for those who adore the original, particularly those who considered “Talk to Me” a modern classic amidst an abundance of exceptional horror movies, the prolonged wait might be disheartening.

In the interim, the upcoming movie “Bring Her Back” from A24 is worth looking forward to for fans. The film will release in theaters on May 30. However, should you need me during this period, I’ll be here… subtly tapping my fingers… eagerly anticipating “Talk to Me 2“. And if you haven’t caught up with its original yet, you can now stream it using a Netflix subscription.
