Numerous Disney live-action adaptations have garnered significant success, thanks to their A-list casts and innovative approaches. Notably, Glenn Close delivered a standout performance as Cruella De Vil in 101 Dalmatians, Maleficent offered a fresh take on the classic villain, and The Jungle Book skillfully merged live action scenes with computer-generated imagery. However, the upcoming Lilo & Stitch live-action remake seems to closely resemble the original, which might be why it falls short in my opinion.
The live action Lilo & Stitch‘s trailer does show an absolutely freaking adorable Stitch in his CGI form. However, everything else I’m seeing appears to look like a replication of the original Walt Disney Animation Studios feature. If you want more proof of what I’m talking about, ET’s Instagram video showed a “spot-on comparison” between the original and upcoming live action Disney remake. I have to say, their identical resemblance feels like an issue here:

In the new version of Lilo & Stitch, it appears that the scene where Lilo introduces Stitch is very similar to the original 2002 film, almost as if it’s a direct copy. Many viewers on Instagram have commented that it seems like a carbon copy of the original, and I tend to agree. While I’ve appreciated remakes of foreign horror films like Funny Games or REC that stayed true to the original vision while adapting for a different culture, this new take on Lilo & Stitch might not offer as much freshness. However, since David doesn’t get burned in cinders like in the 2002 film (which is available on Disney+), there’s still a chance that it could offer something unique.
Initially, “Lilo & Stitch” left a lasting impression on American viewers when it first came out, but I’m not sensing that the 2025 live-action version will bring anything new or innovative other than a live cast. Reflecting on the Disney animated film after more than two decades, “Lilo & Stitch” stands out for its authentic portrayal of Hawaiian culture and for introducing one of the most heartwarming friendships between a solitary girl and a blue extraterrestrial.

Beyond stating it, the animation’s uniqueness was evident when Stitch first surfed with Nani and Lilo, as a massive, foamy sea-green wave enveloping the “Ohana” family suggested realism and charm. However, watching this scene in the trailer didn’t evoke the same level of amazement for me. If they plan to remake this animated sci-fi comedy, it seems like we’ll simply be witnessing the same storyline again, but this time in a live-action version.
Modern Disney live-action adaptations have made a splash by offering fresh spins on familiar tales. For instance, the updated version of Aladdin introduced a new tune for Jasmine and enhanced her character from a mere love interest to a strong leader. Similarly, the revamped Mulan excelled by eliminating songs and the romantic aspect, instead highlighting Mulan’s journey towards self-discovery. The success of the remake of The Little Mermaid can be attributed to its emphasis on Ariel and Eric’s love story as well as its commitment to diversity and inclusive casting for the charming mermaid character.
From observing the side-by-side comparison of the Lilo & Stitch remake, I have concerns that the movie might face issues if it maintains this approach throughout. If the upcoming film only offers a live-action version without any fresh ideas, it could come across as a reenactment rather than a reinvention. However, I may change my opinion once the Disney production premieres in theaters on May 23.
