Starting April 4, 2025, the miniseries titled “Dying For Sex” premieres, featuring Michelle Williams in the lead role along with a captivating ensemble of characters. This FX/Hulu production is adapted from Nikki Boyer’s podcast series and revolves around Molly Kochan, portrayed by Williams, who, after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis, abandons her sexual inhibitions and embraces life wholeheartedly. In her challenging journey, Molly seeks solace in her best friend, Nikki, and mother, Gail.
Having all eight episodes streamed on Hulu, “Dying for Sex” skillfully intertwines the raw truths of cancer with lighthearted escapism, making the series surprisingly less somber than one might initially expect based on its subject matter. As usual, Williams delivers a remarkable performance that is further enhanced by the vibrant characters and exceptional acting talent portraying them. Meet these intriguing personalities now.
Michelle Williams as Molly Kochan
Five-time Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams portrays Molly Kochan in the film “Dying for Sex.” In the story, Molly is a woman whose life undergoes a significant transformation following a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. As the illness progresses swiftly, Molly decides to abruptly end her 13-year marriage and embark on a journey of self-discovery and sexual exploration. During this time, she relies on her friend Nikki to help shed her reservations and embrace life fully with the limited time she has remaining.
Following her debut in the teen series “Dawson’s Creek,” Williams has established herself as a genuine cinematic star with Oscar-worthy abilities. She has graced the big screen in films such as “Brokeback Mountain,” “Blue Valentine,” “My Week with Marilyn,” “Manchester by the Sea,” “The Fabelmans,” and the FX miniseries “Fosse/Verdon.
Jenny Slate as Nikki Boyer
Jenny Slate portrays Nikki Boyer, one of the co-hosts of the podcast that serves as the basis for the miniseries. A blend of caregiver and facilitator, Nikki dedicates her life to caring for Molly after her cancer diagnosis. Nikki is an unconventional aspiring actor with a tumultuous personality, often causing disorder and perplexity. Despite her disarray, Nikki motivates Molly to explore her sexuality and seize every moment of life given the time constraints.
Jenny Slate is a multi-talented live performer and voice actor who has accumulated over 80 roles since she entered the industry. She shared the screen with Michelle Williams in Venom, and her impressive resume also includes parts in Obvious Child, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Bob’s Burgers, Big Mouth, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, and numerous other projects.
Jay Duplass as Steve
In the movie “Dying for Sex”, Jay Duplass takes on the role of Steve, who is Molly’s long-term spouse. After 13 years of marriage, Molly decides to leave him. Later, when Molly is diagnosed with cancer, Steve shows less empathy towards her new sexual needs, causing their relationship to become tense. Eventually, Molly ends the marriage and spends more time with Nikki, participating in sex parties.
Alongside his brother Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass made his debut in low-budget indie films known as mumblecore movies during the early 2000s. Notable projects featuring Duplass’ talent include “The Puffy Chair”, “Transparent”, “Jeff, Who Lives at Home”, “Search Party”, “The Chair”, “Pain Hustlers”, “The Mindy Project”, “Togetherness”, “Industry”, and “Cyrus” among others.
Rob Delaney as Neighbor Guy
Rob Delaney plays the character known as “Neighbor Guy,” who is an attractive neighbor living next door. Molly often satisfies her desires with him without learning his real name. Despite the fear that cancer brings to her, he helps her unwind and focus on something other than her terror. His goofy nickname aligns well with a typical character from a sitcom.
As a cinephile, I’ve been fortunate to be part of over 60 projects since 2004, but it’s my roles as Deadpool and Wolverine, the quirky characters in Bad Monkey, Catastrophe, Argylle, Black Mirror, and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 that have left a lasting impact. Additionally, I’ve lent my voice to series like Big Nate, The Great North, Invincible, Birdgirl, Fairfax, and many others.
Sissy Spacek as Gail
As an esteemed movie critic, I’d rephrase it like this: “In the gripping drama ‘Dying For Sex’, Academy Award-winning actress Sissy Spacek portrays Gail, a former drug addict striving for sobriety and being Molly’s mother. In Episode 5, titled “My Pet”, Gail pays a visit to Molly, offering emotional solace following her cancer diagnosis. Despite their strained past, Gail makes an effort to stand by Molly during this trying period, fostering a journey towards healing and reconciliation.
Actress Sissy Spacek has made a lasting impact in the film industry with her exceptional performances. She first gained recognition through Brian De Palma’s ‘Carrie’, followed by roles in films such as ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’, ‘In the Bedroom’, ‘The Help’, ‘JFK’, ‘The Straight Story’, ‘Affliction’, and numerous others. On the small screen, Spacek has also left her mark on TV shows like ‘Big Love’, ‘Bloodline’, ‘Castle Rock’, ‘Homecoming’, and most recently, ‘Night Sky’.
David Rasche as Dr. Pankowitz
In the series “Dying for Sex,” David Rasche plays the role of Dr. Pankowitz, who is Molly’s oncologist and administers her cancer treatments even when she shows resistance. When Molly isn’t out socializing with Nikki, attending sex parties, or having encounters with Neighbor Guy, she spends her leisure time at the hospital, where Dr. Pankowitz cares for her in a friendly and compassionate manner.
Following his role in “Succession”, Rasche is a multi-talented actor who has amassed more than 140 credits throughout his career. Some of his most notable performances are found in projects like the Coen Brothers’ “Burn After Reading”, “In the Loop”, “United 93”, “Men in Black 3”, “All My Children”, “Ugly Betty”, “High Society”, “Sledge Hammer!”, “Veep”, and “Impastor”.
Margaret Cho as a Cancer Patient
In the series “Dying for Sex,” Margaret Cho portrays a fellow cancer patient at the hospital where Molly is a patient. Her character brings humor to an otherwise somber setting, showcasing her comedic talent and long history in sitcoms. Although she successfully helps Molly find moments of laughter amidst the hospital’s sadness, it seems that Cho’s screen time could be expanded for a more impactful performance.
In addition to her successful stand-up comedy career, Margaret Cho is most famously recognized for her role in the Asian-American sitcom All-American Girl from the mid-90s. Some other notable appearances include roles on shows like Drop Dead Diva, 30 Rock, Good Trouble, Hacks, The Flight Attendant, Tuca & Bertie, Fire Island, Life & Beth, Sex Appeal, The Book of Queer, and many more.
