Suits’ Gabriel Macht Reveals Why He Returned as Harvey Specter for LA Spinoff

Recently, approximately five years since “Suits” concluded its nine-season airing on USA Network, Gabriel Macht resurrected the character of Harvey Specter in the spinoff show, “Suits LA,” now showing on NBC. This marks the beginning of his three scheduled guest appearances; the remaining two are slated for the upcoming Sundays according to the 2025 TV schedule. While Macht has disclosed reasons behind his return to Harvey for this new series, he also hinted at something that gives me pause about future appearances of him on “LA.

Last November, it was announced that Gabriel Macht would visit “Suits LA”. The creator of the series, Aaron Korsh, revealed that since NBC wanted one original cast member, Harvey was the most logical choice for the plot. While this wouldn’t have happened without Macht’s agreement, the plan was to depict Harvey as friends with Stephen Amell’s character Ted Black from 2010. With the LA team accommodating his schedule, Macht was eager to join in. As he shared with The Hollywood Reporter:

In considering the setting where Suits LA is displayed, I pondered, “You know what? I have an idea! I’d like to return something to the fans as they’re so eager for more of this character. If I can aid the show in my unique way and attract some attention to it, that could be quite a wonderful gesture.” And that’s how everything began. It all fell into place. They managed to create a plan that worked for my family, and here we are.

In a prequel setting, the storyline of Suits LA unfolds one year prior to the start of the original series, implying that Harvey Specter has yet to cross paths with Mike Ross and continues to exhibit his arrogance in abundance. However, he was not only self-assured but also had a protective streak towards those close to him, extending to Ted Black, a teammate from their baseball days. After consulting his connections within the NYC District Attorney’s office, Harvey shared intel with Ted about an individual working for Pellegrini, the mob boss Ted was aiming to take down, who happened to be in his own office.

Based on the sneak peek of this coming Sunday’s episode, my longing for Harvey Denton’s appearance in the current timeline on Suits LA seems to have come true. However, I can’t say for certain what lies ahead for his character over the next two episodes. In a later part of the interview, Gabriel Macht hinted that this might be Harvey’s final appearance in the spinoff, when asked if he was open to reprising his role again.

It seems appropriate that I returned when I did, and it feels right to depart at this moment. Initially, I may have been here to hand over the reins to Suits LA, but they’re already thriving, and they’re a strong team. They possess compelling narratives and writing, which will undoubtedly keep fans engaged. I don’t believe they need me back now, but who knows what the future holds! If an opportunity arises where it fits well – considering my numerous other interests and ongoing projects – then maybe I’ll return.

It’s clear that the new series, Suits LA, aims to focus on Ted Black and his ensemble of characters such as Erica Rollins (Lex Scott Davis), Stuart Lane (Josh McDermitt) and Rick Dodsen (Bryan Greenberg). This shouldn’t take away from the original Suits’ characters who had nine seasons to make their mark. I also get that Gabriel Macht is involved in other projects right now, like his Bear Fight Whiskey business and producing short stories.

While I’m eagerly anticipating this three-episode stint of Harvey Specter on Suits LA, I can only hope that the storyline doesn’t seal his departure permanently. If the narrative allows, I’d love to see him resurface in future seasons, ideally set in the present day. This wish is contingent upon the success and longevity of Suits LA, with Gabriel Macht possibly reprising his role even years later instead of forcing him into Season 2 right away.

Great news! It’s not just Gabriel Macht who’ll be back on Suits LA. Also joining the cast are Rick Hoffman, reprising his role as Louis Litt, and David Costabile returning as Daniel Hardman. The first season still has six episodes left, airing every Sunday at 9 pm.
