The latest procedural series from NBC, titled The Hunting Party, has garnered significant popularity among viewers, even though it hasn’t received the warmest welcome from critics. Interestingly, the opinions of critics and viewers on this show are polar opposites, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 18% from the former and 81% from the latter. While it may follow the typical cop show format, the low rating by critics seems rather questionable in light of the positive feedback from the audience. Fans have already started requesting a second season.

In keeping with the conventions of network dramas, I found myself left hanging at the end of the first season of “The Hunting Party.” Although some tantalizing hints for a potential second season were neatly tied up, the final moments of the finale have stirred up a whirlwind of questions. The storylines, action sequences, acting, and array of guest stars have left viewers craving more. However, the unpredictable nature of the modern TV industry means that a second season is by no means a certainty. Yet, should we be fortunate enough to witness another installment, here’s what I’d like to see unfold: Taking cues from the clues dropped in the finale, I can imagine how these intriguing threads might play out if “The Hunting Party” manages to return for a second round.

The Setup and Premise of ‘The Hunting Party’

For those intrigued viewers, “The Hunting Party” could be simply put as a blend of “The Blacklist” and “Criminal Minds” – be aware that some plot points are revealed here. The series centers around Melissa Roxburgh’s character, FBI agent Bex Henderson, who is an expert in criminal profiling. She takes on the case of a secret underground prison known as The Pit, which holds the world’s deadliest serial killers. However, it’s not linked to the new sensation “Max drama”. When a mysterious explosion occurs at The Pit, several inmates manage to escape. Initially believed to be an accident, Bex and her team soon realize that the explosion was no coincidence. Each episode follows Bex as she tracks down one of the escaped killers with the assistance of CIA agent Ryan Hassani, Pit officer Shane Florence, and former FBI partner Oliver Odell.

In a style reminiscent of network dramas, Bex and her team encounter thoughtfully-escaped convicts from prison. This means that only one fugitive is active at any given time, and they wait until the crew has captured the previous troublemaker before making their move. Thanks to TV wizardry, each murderer is apprehended within a day or two, although new deaths among background actors may occur. Realistic? Not quite. But is it intense, exaggerated, and suspenseful entertainment? Absolutely!

This leads us to the final episode of the season – expect more spoilers about the finale. Bex and their group hunt for Jenna Wells, a pharmacist infamous for contaminating her patients’ medications with deadly substances. Makes you wonder if it’s safe to ever leave home again. However, despite initial suspicions that Wells might escape Bex’s group’s grasp, they ultimately catch her in the end. The team also discovers the culprit behind the explosion at the Pit.

Wealthy individual James Whitmore conducted questionable medical tests involving mind-changing substances on people before the military seized his research and started using it on prisoners in The Pit. Angry about losing his possessions, Whitmore arranged an explosion to allow the prisoners to flee while simultaneously destroying proof of the project. One of Whitmore’s primary test subjects was Wells, and these experiments led her to think she would transform into the people she had abducted and killed.

Hints About a Second Season Storyline for ‘The Hunting Party’

Things appeared to be resolved when Wells impersonated Bex following his initial escape from capture. However, it seemed like the season would conclude there, but Bex found and killed Wells who had taken Odell hostage at their base. But To add to the drama, he had just confessed his love for Bex under duress, a sentiment she did not return. Oh dear.

From my perspective as a cinema enthusiast, it seems that, just like all of Wells’ past targets, Odell met an end after a similar encounter. This might suggest his earthly days are numbered, but there’s always a chance we’ll see him return in the future. His history with Bex stretches back to when he was dismissed from the force due to his overzealous interrogation methods. The Pit reactivated him for a role as its warden, where he collaborated with the enigmatic military figure called Lazarus, who goes by the name Lazarus.

Shane’s quest for his biological parents ties into an ongoing mystery in the story. Over the course of the season, we’ve seen Shane trying to find out who his parents are, and a doctor at The Pit who knew him as a child may hold the key. However, this doctor has dementia, making it difficult to get answers from him. In the finale, we learn that Shane’s mother is someone called Lazarus, but she was unable to interact with him during his childhood at The Pit. It’s clear that Lazarus is closely connected to Whitmore, The Pit, and the cover-up. We also get the sense that Shane’s role goes beyond being just a test subject, but we don’t yet know what it is.

It will be more challenging to uncover those answers since the Attorney General has disbanded Bex’s team of investigators, as she claimed they were careless and overly risky in their methods. However, it remains uncertain whether the AG realizes that this group managed to locate every fugitive within a short span by simply typing on a computer for a brief period and then traveling to their hideouts on the same day. Where else could one find such swift outcomes?

In a covert fashion, the troop might delve deeper in the second season, given their past success in apprehending Wells. This is because they’ve been keeping tabs on the AG as well, due to her connection with Whitmore’s foundation. The added layer of secretive operations could intensify the drama. However, ratings for The Hunting Party have not been promising, so a second season is uncertain. If it does return, there are numerous plot threads left hanging that need resolution.
