Madhur Bhandarkar reveals Mahesh Bhatt ‘hurled abuses’ at him for sleeping at home when Chandni Bar released: ‘You’re a mad, foolish guy’

Madhur Bhandarkar, a filmmaker who’s won national awards, has produced numerous successful films over the years. One of these is the 2001 movie, Chandni Bar, which garnered many praises and financial success. Chandni Bar, featuring Tabu and Atul Kulkarni, was the second motion picture directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. Upon its debut, this movie garnered widespread praise and favorable comments from viewers. However, the filmmaker didn’t realize his film had become a success as he was spending most of his time resting at home during that period.

During a conversation with Game Changers, the head of Fashion mentioned that he was sleeping on a carpeted floor in his 1 BHK apartment under a fan. Around 2 pm, senior filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt called him. The first question Bhatt asked was where he was, to which a groggy Madhur replied that he was at home. According to Bhandarkar, he was criticized in the following manner: “He verbally attacked me, saying, ‘You’re absurdly foolish. Despite your movie being a massive success and a box office hit, you’re still resting. I suggest you go see the crowds outside the theaters. Opportunities like these don’t come around often,'” Bhandarkar reminisced.

The harsh criticism from Bhatt motivated him to act quickly, so he went to several bustling city cinemas that were packed at the moment. Despite being unknown to most people, he noticed the joy on the faces of those leaving the movie theater. It was then that Bhatt contacted him again and thanked him for his timely encouragement.

In the interview, Madhur shared his belief that the movie would be successful and he was resting at home in anticipation. However, when he visited another cinema on Friday, he grew concerned. When he asked spectators about the film, some praised it while others remained silent. But once the film gained massive popularity, Tabu phoned him excitedly, saying “Look what you’ve accomplished!”, adding that the movie had a phenomenal opening with many distributors contacting her.
