Instead of sticking strictly to the original “Fatal Fury,” “City of the Wolves” reinvents “Mark of the Wolves” with innovative gameplay mechanics that offer a fresh perspective.
The REV System is what’s behind the game’s sharpest moves, tight combos, and key defenses.
Instead of conventional meters, this one encourages continuity by rewarding momentum, discourages going too far, and turns the art of managing it into an engaging mental challenge.
If you’re curious about what makes REV stand out, here’s a breakdown of how it works.
What Is the REV System?
Instead of boosting its strength as you feed it energy, the REV System maintains control and grows stronger over time.
As you execute moves such as Rev Art, Rev Acceleration, or Rev Blast, your Power Gauge (let’s call it that) gradually fills up. Exceeding your capacity will cause an overheating issue, rendering all Rev skills inoperable until they have cooled off again.
The balance between risk and reward plays a crucial role in the unique combat encounter. The REV gauge serves as a storage unit for an array of skills at your disposal. One particularly thrilling move within this system is the REV Blast.
In this new battle scenario, understanding the trade-off between risk and reward is essential. The REV bar functions like a pool of abilities that you can tap into. Among the exciting features in the REV system, the REV Smash stands out as one of them.
This action is robust and powerful, equipped to absorb attacks from opponents while simultaneously landing a precise hit. REV Blows are effective whether used on the ground or mid-flight, becoming an especially formidable threat when you’re within the S.P.G. (Selective Potential Gear) zone.
These assaults disrupt the rhythm, offering an immediate retreat when situations intensify. However, each time you activate a REV skill, you inch nearer to Overheating. This isn’t merely a cooling-off period; Overheating significantly alters your gaming strategy.
If the REV meter reaches its maximum, you won’t be able to perform any moves dependent on REV. To make matters worse, your defense meter (guard gauge) is now in danger. Normally, the guard gauge doesn’t decrease just from blocking, but it might break during an Overheat situation.

If so, you’re an exposed character, regardless of your location on the screen. When assistance is required, REV Guard stands ready to help. Essentially, it serves as a shield that maintains a safe distance between you and your adversary, nullifying all chip damage (yes, even lethal damage in this game).
In a pinch, the REV Guard function is useful for escaping sticky situations or resetting your distance, but keep in mind that it drains your REV meter every time you activate it. Moreover, the mechanics of REV and S.P.G systems are intricately connected. At the start of each match, you select a segment of your health bar as your “power zone” – this could be the beginning, middle, or end.
When your health falls to a critical level, you transition into the Special Power Gauge (S.P.G.) state. This empowers a health regeneration spike, enhances your damage output, and grants access to potent skills such as REV Blow and the Hidden Weapon, which is a dramatic two-bar super ability.
With REV, you can execute your finest maneuvers with ease, and SPG is all about amplifying those moves, making them quicker, stronger, and potentially game-changing. If you’re curious about the inner workings of SPG and why it replaced the previous TOP system, our guide provides valuable insights into its operation.
