Initially, the news of Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sparked a wave of uncertainty. His portrayal of the character in James Mangold’s 2017 film Logan, an R-rated comic book movie, was given a powerful and moving conclusion, and it was so well-received that it even received an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay. However, the success of Deadpool & Wolverine left a loophole for Jackman to return as the character, offering a more comic-accurate version with elements long desired by fans, such as his classic cowl and even a face-off against Sabertooth, although not the one fans had hoped for from X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
In the Deadpool movie, it was Tyler Mane who brought the Sabertooth character to life, as he had previously played him in Bryan Singer’s first X-Men film from 2000. However, Liev Schreiber is best known for his portrayal of the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Despite that movie receiving negative reviews, the interaction between Schreiber and Jackman was appreciated by fans, leading to hopes that they would work together again as these characters. Now, Jackman and Schreiber are teaming up once more, with Jackman posting about their past collaboration on social media.
In the post you see below, Jackman shared a picture of him and Schreiber standing together, with a throwback photo from ‘Origins’ serving as a point of comparison. Even though this isn’t the long-awaited reunion fans hoped for, it’s enjoyable to witness Jackman reminiscing about their past collaboration. Since Jackman is set to resume his role as Wolverine, there’s always a chance Schreiber might don the claws once more for a multiverse-spanning adventure.
Hugh Jackman’s Success With ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Leaves the Door Open for Another Reunion
Originally, an early version of the Logan script included Liev Schreiber’s character, Sabertooth, appearing in a minor role. In a 2017 interview with CinemaBlend, co-writer Scott Frank mentioned that in this draft, the characters Logan, Charles, and Laura were supposed to travel to Oklahoma in search of Sabertooth’s aid. This scene was later changed to take place at a casino in the final movie. Having Schreiber’s Sabertooth portrayed as older and less damaged than his brother, since he lacked adamantium, would have added an intriguing twist. Regrettably, this idea didn’t make it into the finished film.
In the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series known as the Multiverse Saga, a number of classic X-Men characters will reappear in the film Avengers: Doomsday. This recent casting news suggests that the return of actor Schreiber to his role may not be too unrealistic. Previously, he expressed regret about not being part of Logan, and has shown interest in exploring the motivations behind the two mutant brothers. Consequently, it seems there are still untold stories that could revolve around these two characters.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement over the potential return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine following the impressive box office success of Deadpool and his character. The prospect of him teaming up with his bloodthirsty brother in another project truly promises an exhilarating new chapter. However, Marvel Studios remains tight-lipped about their future plans for this iconic character, leaving us fans eagerly awaiting further news.
