The New Ninja Gaiden Is Actually A Direct Sequel To The Original

This year, we’re seeing a significant return of Ninja Gaiden, with multiple games being launched, but just one offshoot will serve as a true sequel to the ’90s trilogy that originally debuted.

In the same timeline as the original Ninja Gaiden series, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is set to launch this coming summer. Dotemu and The Game Kitchen are getting ready for its arrival.

A Parallel Ninja Adventure

In Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, the narrative revolves around Kenji Mozu, a disciple of the Hayabusa Clan who learned from the main character of the initial series, Ryu Hayabusa. The events in Ragebound unfold as Ryu departs to seek vengeance for his father. Essentially, it’s a sequel that follows along with the original games, though it runs somewhat concurrently.

Fans have already glimpsed gameplay for Kenji several months ago following the official reveal, but he’s just one of the two primary characters. Now let’s delve into Kumori – a character from the Black Spider Clan who embodies the female ninja archetype often found in Ninja Gaiden. Here is a sneak peek at her:

Kumori stands out because she’s sort of a demon character, and utilizing her gives gamers access to the ‘demon world’, a place filled with even more hidden mysteries – much like the Upside Down in Stranger Things.

The Evolution of the Ninja Gaiden Franchise

Though new Ninja Gaiden games have continued in a 3D format, Ragebound instead opts for the original 2D style but with updated pixel art to match contemporary standards, similar to Dotemu’s other retro titles such as TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to anticipate the challenges ahead in Ragebound, given that its predecessors, the Ninja Gaiden games, were notorious for their difficulty. Embracing the complexity of 2D-platforming reminiscent of the Blasphemous series, it seems we’re in for quite a thrilling ride!

This summer of 2025, the highly anticipated game titled Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound will be available on various platforms such as PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
