The blockbuster film titled “Minecraft: The Movie” has achieved an astounding milestone at the box office. Based on the popular video game, it tells the story of Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (portrayed by Jason Momoa) and a group of diverse individuals who find themselves stranded in a strange land called the Overworld. Here, Steve, a longtime resident of this world (played by Jack Black), guides them through their journey. The opening weekend of “Minecraft: The Movie” set a new record for video game movies with an impressive $162.6 million debut, making it the highest-grossing premiere in the genre’s history.
By the deadline, on Thursday, marking the last day of the third weekend for “A Minecraft Movie,” the film collected an extra $6.5 million at the domestic box office. This now totals its domestic earnings to a staggering $303.3 million, meaning it surpassed the $300 million milestone in North America within only 14 days. It is the first movie of this year to achieve this feat, and it is the 20th film since 2020 to do so, joining an esteemed group that includes successful movies like “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Inside Out 2,” and “Wicked.
What This Means For A Minecraft Movie
It Is On Track To Earn $1 Billion
The performance of the Minecraft Movie at the box office is noteworthy by itself, but it’s also worth mentioning that it’s continuing to follow the path towards becoming a billion-dollar film. To date, only one video game movie – 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie – has managed to surpass $1 billion. Although Minecraft exceeded Mario’s opening weekend earnings of $146.4 million, it has yet to surpass its 2023 counterpart. The Super Mario Bros. Movie crossed the $300 million mark on its eleventh day and ultimately grossed $1.361 billion worldwide. However, if the latest release maintains its current pace, it could potentially reach a total of $1.126 billion.
It’s quite probable that the box office earnings of the Minecraft movie have already surpassed the point where it starts making a profit, known as the break-even point. With an estimated budget of $150 million, this likely sets the break-even point at approximately $375 million. Given that its North American gross has nearly reached this figure and its global earnings have surpassed $550 million, the movie is already in a financially secure position despite still being in theaters.
Our Take On The Minecraft Movie Milestone
It Is Already One Of 2025’s Biggest Hits
Beyond being a blockbuster among video game films, it appears that The Minecraft Film is poised to be one of the top-grossing domestic movies of the entire year. In even the strongest years during the 2020s, no more than eight movies have ever made over $300 million in North America, with the highest being eight in 2022. While Minecraft might eventually be outperformed by films like Fantastic Four: First Footsteps, Wicked: For Good, and Avatar: Fire and Ash, it will still stand among the elite.
