Bella Ramsey Opens Up About Being Non-Binary

Star Bella Ramsey publicly identified as non-binary in the year 2023 and prefers to be referred using ‘they/them’ pronouns. Navigating this identity can sometimes be challenging, given not everyone embraces or understands non-binary identities.

When speaking with Ramsey, they shared their thoughts about choosing to publicly announce their non-binary identity. “Sometimes, I find myself yearning for the past, wishing I hadn’t done so, as I didn’t want it to be sensationalized and grab attention,” they expressed. “However, I underestimated how much it would draw focus, which wasn’t clear to me initially. I wasn’t fully prepared for the impact it would have. Yet, others have told me that seeing this representation has been incredibly beneficial for them.

Well, it’s been a blend of experiences, but looking back, I’d say it was largely positive for me, as I’ve been able to live more openly without the burden of secrecy. However, now I find myself expressing my feelings about it, but preferring not to make it the center of attention anymore. In essence, I’m just taking things easy with it, and I hope everyone else can do the same, especially Ellie and her partner Dina, as well as Bill and Frank from Season 1.

In the anticipated next installment of The Last of Us, we’re likely to encounter a transgender teenager named Lev, who is a character from the game’s source material. Notably, Ramsey isn’t the only non-binary individual in the entertainment industry to publicly disclose their identity. Similarly, there are others like them, including, who have achieved great success. Their preferred pronouns are respected and acknowledged by their fellow actors.

Pedro Pascal has been a strong advocate for transgender individuals, given his vocal support and having a transgender sister. Ramsey appreciated this support immensely. In an interview, the actor opened up about Ramsey’s backing for the first time, discussing their shared use of pronouns. “I always felt like he stood by me,” Ramsey stated. “We look out for each other.

The costume team made an effort to ensure I felt at ease, by providing various options of undergarments in my dressing room – a regular bra, a binder, and a sports bra. They would always encourage me to choose what felt most comfortable on any given day, ultimately settling on a binder. There was never anyone pushing or coercing me.
