Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney are preparing for a film version based on the popular Sega video game series, titled “OutRun”.
Universal Pictures is taking charge of a project, with Michael Bay handling both direction and production duties, and Brian Sweeney joining in for production as well. Jayson Rothwell has been assigned to write the script, but specifics about the plot are currently under wraps.
Bay and Brad Fuller are in charge of creating this movie through their agreement as first pick producers with the studio, courtesy of Platinum Dunes. Toru Nakahara serves as the producer for Sega, while Shuji Utsumi, president of Sega Corporation, keeps an eye on the project for Sega, acting as the gaming corporation’s representative.
The first version of the classic game “OutRun” was introduced in 1986, where players had to navigate through traffic and reach their goal before time expired. Since then, the series has continued to be one of Sega’s iconic franchises after multiple follow-up games were released.
At the studio, Universal’s top executives Matt Reilly (as Executive Vice President of Production Development) and Ryan Jones (in his role as Senior Vice President of Production Development), are responsible for managing the project.
The thriving Hollywood film industry has recognized the potential in bringing video games to life on the big screen, thanks to the triumphs of Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise, and this month’s Warner Bros./Legendary production, “A Minecraft Movie”. In the coming months, Universal is planning to launch “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2”, a sequel to the horror film adaptation of the gaming series, which starred Josh Hutcherson.
After that, you’ll spot Sweeney acting alongside Julianne Moore in the series titled “Echo Valley“, set to premiere on Apple TV+ in June.
Bay is managed by Rich Cook at Range Media Partners. On the other hand, Sweeney is represented by Paradigm, imPRint, and Stewart Brookman at Hansen Jacobson. Additionally, Rothwell is under the management of Cliff Roberts at Syndicate Entertainment as well as Austin Williams at Sloan Offer.
